An expertly handled primer on the basics of contemporary Satanism.

In this guide, McGreggor reveals a number of precepts common to contemporary Satanism. Not surprisingly, he endeavors to distance contemporary Satanism from the despicable reputation societies throughout recent history have bestowed upon it - an uphill battle that is both refreshing and invigorating to see being taken on by a new generation of adroit Satanists. McGreggor should be applauded for the candor and sincerity with which he presents the material and the obviously well executed manner in which he writes. Not only is the text easy to read and understand, the cadence and flow of his language demonstrates a command of the written word that is often sorely lacking in other writings on the subject. This makes the text accessible to and digestible for a large audience which can only serve to aid Satanism's reclaiming of respect towards its practices and beliefs.
McGreggor examines a few common sects of modern Satanism and elaborates on the similarities and differences between them with a slant toward Theistic Satanism (though he is explicit about this bias). The book comes across as a "primer" or starter guide to Satanism, and in this regard, accomplishes the job exceptionally. Though it is intended for the curious, uninitiated, or knowledge seeking individual, it could benefit even seasoned Satanists as a refresher with its clear and concise treatment of basic tenets of Satanism - why they exist and even how to apply them.
Unfortunately, I was left wanting more. It is quite clear that McGreggor not only has a love for the subject of Satanism, he also appears to have a great deal of both practical and academic knowledge about it as well. In a day and age where intelligently handled occult information is hard to come by (even with the vast resources on the internet), McGreggor is filling the void and I come away from this book with the hope that he will apply his clear and practiced writing style to other aspects of Satanism - hopefully with more depth into the practical ones such as power meditation, ritual, magicks, and demonolatry.
If one of the challenges to modern-day Satanists (as McGreggor states in this text) is to regain the proper respect accorded to an ancient and venerable (and perfectly viable) religion, it is good to see the ranks populated with people like McGreggor who are up to the challenge and equipped to "move the needle" as it were on the contemporary understanding (and ultimately acceptance) of Satanism.
