It helped me with IB math!

Prior to purchasing this book I doubted whether or not that this would help me with IB math. But after I received it, I found out the problems in the book are just as do-able and helpful as any other new editions'. I received a score of 6 out of 7 for IB math. I recommend this book to those who are struggling with IB math and to those who are willing to score high on IB math as well.

Math for the International Baccalaureate Diploma

Math books usually don't change much. This edition is from 2004 but still used in various schools. It is supposed to support teachers and students because it is meant to be "suitable for self-study". It starts with a well explained repetition of the main subjects of algebra, circular functions, and trigonometry, including exercises. Then the authors jump right into calculus. Sequences, series, logarithms, matrices, vectors, probability, and statistics come next. Knowledge how to use a graphing calculator is needed, but the authors neither recommend any nor explain any procedures with them. For the exercises the answers are given, but not explained either. For a book meant for self-study this is a definite disadvantage. That's why I can't give it five stars.

Please read this book!

When I tried reading this book a few years ago, for some reason, I couldn't get over the first few pages. This past week I gave it a try again in order to brush up on my portuguese (I'm brazilian!), and I couldn't put the book down until I was finished!

Read it, and try to read it slowly. The book is short but so full of wonderful lessons that will stick with you for the rest of your life.

What's not to love? I bought this for learning Portuguese as a somewhat intermediate student. I have read the original so many times, it certainly helps, and with a good dictionary and grammar book, I can make it through. Great to read in the original Portuguese, if a bit slow!

Useful as a reference, not as a book to learn from

I agree with Van Denburg's evaluation.
I am a graduate student in Psychology, and I find the Hays text mostly illegible. His prose is dense and his explanations rely very heavily on mathematical formulae instead of real-world or logical/verbal descriptions. Furthermore, he falls into the typical "math textbook" pit of giving solutions to only the example problems that are exceptions to what one would usually encounter.
This is especially bad considering that my concentration specializes in statistical inference, and I've studied mathematics through differential equations (including linear algebra, multivariate).
Worse, Hays has a tendency to use different symbols to represent variables compared to other statistical texts (and in some cases, the rest of the world!)
Lastly, the tables that Hays has in the back of his book are not notated. He does not explain what each table represents, or what the x or y axis are. In one case, he has two entries for each lookup in the ANOVA Power of Association (omega squared) (Table XII, page 1032). Nowhere in the table does it mention what these two values are for.
It is only in one paragraph 600 pages earlier, that he explains that the two values are for alpha=0.05 and 0.01 and that n must be equal for both groups!! (page 410)
I am currently relying on several other texts to understand statistics for the social/behaviourial sciences. If you are extremely comfortable with mathematics to describe your behaviourial tests, you may find this book valuable. If you prefer a more descriptive approach, I suggest another one.

Invaluable reference; Not for pleasure reading

Hays's text is not meant for everyone; hence the mixed reviews. It was not the primary source from which I gained my knowledge of statistics; however it serves as an invaluable reference. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I had little difficulty understanding the material as Hays presented it. Some of the criticisms are points well-taken; for example a lack of annotation in the power tables at the end of the book (which are still decipherable if you know what you're looking at).
This text is for the mathematically inclined-it is not a "how-to" book, rather a "why" book that thoroughly explains the theory behind a variety of popular inferential techniques. If this is the sort of knowledge you are seeking, Hays is the book for you. If you are interested in a more "common-sense" or applied approach, perhaps you should look elsewhere.

This text is a true CLASSIC in the field of statistics. It is unique, extremely well-written, and a book you will return to time after time if you are serious about learning and understanding statistics. Hays' unique style is such that in his explanations, he takes you a step back, then two steps forward. While it can be said that some writers on statistics don't really understand the subject themselves (which makes it almost impossible to learn from them), this is definitely not the case with Hays's text. Hays' grasp of statistics is unmatched.

We will probably never know the reasons for the disappearance of the bubonic plague from England after 1665. What is clear is the fascination the subject still holds.

They basically help the Professor set up every lab. I am developing a molecular lab from scratch and this book is a great reference. They list the equipment needed in a molecular lab, supplies at each work station, preps for each lab for lab technicians. These authors really put a lot of work into this. The ONLY hiccup (and I hope they are reading this to prepare for their next edition). It would be nice if they added another appendix that lists the equipment, the company AND item number, so that I can purchase the correct items. It is well written. The curriculum is a great layout. They even have real-time PCR as one of the experiments which is exciting. Latest molecular techniques. I think I'' have fun with this!

He has taught management and accounting in a number of universities over 20 years and has publications in Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal, Critical Perspectives on Accounting, Financial management (UK), Advances in Public Interest Accounting, and Journal of Accounting and Organizational Change.

Chandana Alawattage (B.Sc., MBA., Ph.D.) obtained his PhD from Keele University and teaches management accounting at the University of Aberdeen Business School. He has taught management accounting and related subjects in a number of universities over 10 years and has publications in Critical Perspectives on Accounting, Journal of Accounting and Organizational Change and a number of conference proceedings in critical accounting.

Saussy, a Grammy-nominated songwriter and author (Miracle on Main Street) turned conspiracy theorist, makes a case here that will strike most readers as awash in bigotry (of the anti-Catholic variety): "[T]he papacy really does run United States foreign policy, and always has." To prove that, for example, the pope controls Washington, Saussy offers "evidence" such as the number of Catholic senators and other high government officials or that "the land known today as the District of Columbia bore the name `Rome' in 1663 property records." Further, he argues that the Jesuits "have imbued western culture with a purely Catholic political theory" the theory underlying the American Revolution, which in turn was brought about by a Jesuit priest, Lorenzo Ricci (aka Laurence Richey), as part of a plan to make America safe for Roman Catholics. Catholics were oppressed in colonial times, Saussy notes, but Catholic immigrants flooded into the U.S. from Europe in the decades following the Revolution. This book has a blurb from fellow HarperCollins author and conspiracy theorist Jim Marrs, and the publisher, in a press release and apparently asleep at the wheel, calls it a "riveting, well-researched and well-documented account of one man's discovery of the true driving forces behind our nation's history." But most will see it for what it really is an anti-Catholic version of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

Excellent book, a must have if you are to understand the mechansm that controls the earth today. I recommend looking up Prof Walter Veith for anyone desiring a good lecture (try to find his more up to date lecture on youtube). A book that you also must have is Romansm and the Reformation by Henry Grattan Guiness, the work in this book is so profound that it must be read by every living soul on the planet, youl see that sir Isaac Newton and many many others icluding all the reformers were unanimous in their conclusions regarding prophacy, saddly such theology has been erased from the minds of today.

The Big 5-0

This is Loren Estleman's 50th book, and the 17th in the Amos Walker series. Walker's one of the more durable private eyes in the genre currently, with the series starting what must be 20+ years ago. He's a Detroit private detective, sardonic and sarcastic to the point of cliche, and with a first person narrative style that's very very noir. You have to have acquired a taste for this sort of thing, but if you have already been vaccinated, then it can be very fun.

In this outing, Amos is hired by a Latina singing sensation who's visiting the motor city to record a music video. Some time ago someone started to blackmail her. After almost a year of accepting payments, the blackmailer didn't show up to collect her most recent three sets of payments. Since she told the singer that if anything happened to her, the information she was being paid to keep quiet would be released to the press, naturally the singer is worried that something *has* happened to her, and wants Amos to find her, and attempt to retrieve the information if at all possible.

This is a typical Amos Walker detective story. It's not Estleman's best, but his less-than-best is pretty good and entertaining. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in private eye novels.

Great Dialogue and Action in Thin Mystery

At his best, Loren D. Estleman reminds me of Raymond Chandler. At his weakest, his characters are engaging and rewarding. So even if you are not an Estleman fan, I suspect that you will enjoy Poison Blonde.
Poison Blonde belongs to Mr. Estleman's distinguished series featuring private detective, Amos Walker, who haunts the night in Detroit. His work is his life, and vice versa.
Poison Blonde brings him a job working for a hot young recording star, Ms. Gilia Cristobal. The young woman is not whom she seems, and the many ex-cons around her bring Walker onto his guard. One of them is a man he helped put away for life. The music industry scenes ring true, and could have come out of a tabloid. The Detroit color is, as always, solid and striking. The thugs are as stupid and gratuitously cruel as anyone would want.
The character of Gloria Cristobal is a particularly interesting one, and adds a lot to the story. She is one of Mr. Estleman's best characters in years.
The story is fast-paced and engrossing, and I found myself unable to put the book down until I had finished it.
Why did I grade the story down one star? There are mysteries here, but their explanations are the obvious ones that would occur to any reader in the first few seconds. Mr. Estleman does a pretty good job of making them seem more mysterious than they are by putting in lots of color, but at bottom there's not much here to exercise your mental processes.
After you finish enjoying this book, I suggest that you take the time to get to know someone better whom you think you know. Look for the depths behind the obvious social facade. Take what you find and use it to look deeper into the hearts of all those you meet.

superb hard-boiled noir

Latino singer Gilia Cristobel is as hot an act as one will find today with her albums at the top of the charts and her popularity at stratospheric levels at least with music lovers. However, the down side of her meteoric rise is that her fame has brought her to the attention of someone who knew her back in the old country in Central America. That individual has blackmailed Gilia claiming he has proof of her involvement in an atrocity back home.
Paying off her extortionist is worth the lost cash to Gilia, but three months pass without further word from the blackmailer. Desperate to end the potential fiasco that if it went public would sink her career permanently, Gilia hires Detroit private investigator Amos Walker to find the real Gilia who has vanished since the threats surfaced and whose identity the singer has paid for so she can remain in the USA.
The latest Amos Walker tale is the usual superb hard-boiled noir that hooks the reader from the very beginning until the finish because the entire cast seems so genuine. Readers believe what Amos becomes entangled in due to the ensemble, whether they make a cameo appearance or are a key secondary player. The story line is vintage Walker who solves one thing only to be engulfed in something larger. Loren D. Estleman delivers another winner as the Motor City sleuth remains at the top of his game investigating on all cylinders.
