Solid, Sensible

Unlike the contradictory and often ridiculous formatting guidelines found by searching online, this guide presents a solid, sensible, and writerly set of formatting standards.

I especially appreciate the (concisely-expressed) reasons provided for each standard. The best way to remember standards is if they actually make sense and serve a purpose.

Very Basic

This is a good introduction but is by no means all-encompassing. Commonly used formatting types are missing (such as formatting scene headings for a character moving room to room in a house). It focuses on the very basics of formatting. However, I give it 3 stars because the book did a great job explaining how formatting is used in the industry and gave many examples of what not to do. I would have liked to see more on unique formatting (flashbacks, showing a character morphing or aging throughout a script or during flashbacks, post credit scenes, formatting text the writer intends the audience to read, etc.). Overall, I would purchase again for the industry knowledge.

Recent decades have also witnessed an increased emphasis on the important contributions of several pioneering feminist perspectives in the early years of sociology.

Contemporary Sociological Theory: An Integrated, Multi-level Approach

This book covers the major theoretical orientations that have been influential in American sociology since the mid-twentieth century. These include symbolic interaction, phenomenological sociology and ethnomethodology, social exchange and rational choice theories, sociology of emotions, functionalism and neofunctionalism, conflict and critical theory, selected feminist theories, structuration theory, systems theory, sociobiology, selected sociology of culture perspectives, and major themes from postmodern orientations.

The distinctions between micro, meso, and macro levels serve as the organizing framework, with the micro/macro distinction related to the contrast between agency and structure. The various theories and theorists are compared, contrasted, and integrated as appropriate in portraying the complex and multidimensional features of the social world. Everyday life examples enable students to apply these abstract ideas to personal experiences and current social issues.

Summaries of major ideas of the classical stage theorists which serve as a foundation for contemporary theories, including previously neglected contributions of women theorists;

A chapter on formal theory construction, with discussion of its relevance to both quantitative and qualitative data analysis and to the status of sociology as a multiple-paradigm discipline;

Coverage of communities, complex organizations, markets, and socioeconomic classes as distinctive meso-level social formations;

Integration of rational choice theory and sociology of emotions, with application to communities and complex organizations;

Focus on contrasting perspectives within each major theoretical orientation, plus conceptual and analytical linkages among these different orientations;

Cultural systems and sociobiological characteristics covered in separate chapters distinct from the micro/meso/macro levels of the social world;

Explicit attention given to individual identities, personal relationships, social networks, groups, residential and other kinds of communities, internal and external organizational relations, impersonal market transactions, socioeconomic class distinctions, institutional structures, and international relations.

A strong upper-level undergraduate text

Not recommended as a primary text for graduate course (contains no original works of the theorists discussed), but functions well as a companion to primary sources. As a primary text, I'd recommend Johnson's book for junior- or senior-level sociology theory courses. Johnson takes complex concepts and uses easily-understood "real world" examples that allow the reader to understand, and internalize, a great array of highly-influential contemporary social theories. Just as importantly, Johnson offers critiques (of his own, and of other theorists) of each framework he presents to foster critical thinking regarding its pertinence and applicability to a variety of situations. Johnson consistently compares the theories explored to those covered earlier in the text, allowing the student to synthesize these ideas for a multiparadigmatic understanding of social issues. Furthermore, the text gives brief overviews of those in sociology's classical canon (Durkheim, Marx, Weber, et al.), and uses these foundations of sociology as bases for understanding (and critiquing) contemporary thought. Highly recommended.

Fabulous account

For fast-paced excitement, you cannot beat The Day the World Ended, which is a day-by-day account of the 1902 volcano, starting on the 2nd of May 1902 and ending on the 8th, that weaves into this time several strong human interest stories. It was written in 1969, 67 years after the eruption, when the authors could still find a few people close to those times to interview. I get the feeling it was based very much on interviews, which gives it an immediacy not as apparent in the other two books: The Last Days of St. Pierre by Ernest Zebrowski and La Catastrophe by Alwyn Scarth. If you can only read one book, make it this one. it reads like a novel.
The cost of this approach is that we cannot be sure all the stories the authors heard were accurate, so we will never know if some of the stories told here, like the placing of troops to stop people leaving the town are true. But for a feeling of impending doom, this book creates the atmosphere perfectly.

Excellent Disaster Book, Fascinating Story

Thomas and Witts tell the story of a week in May, 1902,when the Carrabean city of St. Pierre was obliterated by a volcanic eruption. When I first saw this book, I wondered how anyone could pen over 150 pages on a volcano that wiped a city out in seconds, leaving only two survivors. I thought there would not be much to write about. Boy was I wrong! It turns out that in the week prior to the eruption, St. Pierre was hit by landslides, a tsunami, and even a deadly snake infestation! Several hundred were killed before the great event itself. The final eruption is simply the climatic horror and can almost be seen as a blessing, putting people out of their misery. This book is probably hard to find now, but it is worth getting, and will interest just about everyone from the scientist to the casual reader.

Story of a Political as Well as Natural Disaster

To me this review does not do justice to the most compelling aspect of the book, which is how political pressure, and assurances of safety in the face of all evidence to the contrary, by governmental officials and other trusted leaders dissuaded the people of St. Pierre from evacuating the city in time to save their lives. I read this book many years ago and have forgotten some of the details, but this theme -- more popularly explored in "Jaws" and recently in "Isaac's Storm" -- has stayed in my mind. Most readers will never be threatened by a volcanic eruption, but this book is a somewhat grim reminder that our own leaders may be lying about impending natural disasters. Remember Pelee!

I had lost my Garde Manger book and this was recommended by a friend. The condition exceeded my expectations and the content is wonderful. It's a tad out of date as far a today's kitchen is concerned but has all things classic and timeless contained in its pages.

Excellent base book

This publication provides a broad range of basic and advanced techniques for the cold kitchen. We used this book in the culinary arts program at the college I attend and I have made many of the recipe's successfully. I withheld one star because I found that universally the recipe's lack proper seasoning. It's a great book for anyone needing real working recipe's and techniques for salads, dressings, hors d hovres, canapes, taurine, sausage making, smoking, and other detail cold kitchen work.

Don't waste your money

There are many other reviews saying exactly the same thing, so I'll keep this short and to the point. This is useless as a preparation for the GRE Physics subject test. Many of the questions require a calculator, which of course means they aren't very close to questions you can expect on the actual test. Some have argued that the book is still nice because it gives a concise summary of major topics which will be on the test, but really all it gives is lists of formulae. Assuming you've taken physics courses, you should have all this material in your textbooks and course notes anyway. There is absolutely no reason to spend your money on this book.

This book is a waste of time. As others have pointed out, the review is less than ten pages of useless physics, while the problems come nowhere near what the actual physics GRE is like. To actually prepare for the physics GRE though, I recommend reviewing your textbooks, working additional problems from there, and getting a few Schaum's outlines, which have tons of solved and unsolved problems and a good review. Then take the actual ETS tests timed to get used to the strategy of fast-paced multiple choice.

Honestly, unless you happen to have some money in need of wasting, as well as a lot of time before your Physics GRE, don't even think of this piece of c**p. It is the single most unhelpful book I have ever come across. The questions in here don't even go close to the real Physics GRE questions or difficulty level, and the answers are more often meaningless than correct.

Well sorry P.V. Spade, I like it!

P.V. Spade reviewed this translation back in the late seventies after its was first published and validates the two introductory essays as some of the best work he has read on the subject. Coming from his expertise this is big praise. However he denotes that Loux's intention for a readable translation leaves many technical errors and translational fudges in the work itself. My advice is to place these interdisperced errors in the back of your mind as you study the work. If you have read the secondary liturature on Ockham's logic this translation will be invaluable, especially if hacking through the original latin isn't a possibility. Some of the most modern scholarship concerning this text can be found in the Cambridge Companion to Ockham, epecially the first 5 chapters. A refresher on Aristotle's Categories will also establish precedent.
