A little gem of a book

I came up to this book quite serendipitously, and I'm happy I did.

This is one of the easiest-to-read books on Enterprise Architecture out there, and I ended up going thru it the first time in a single read. It has a conversational style of writing, as if the office expert was sitting in the next chair and sharing his experience. This should be the *first* book you read on EBA, before you pick up any of the other, heavier, tomes.

(btw, I don't have a Kindle, but the Kindle-for-PC app works very well to read this).

Weber as a hard-nosed realist
By not a natural
In spite of the real differences between them, Weber and Marx sometimes seem to have more in common than is often acknowledged. American social scientists' deification of Weber and limited interest in Marx has given short-shrift to the conflictual nature of social life as Weber understood it. In the process, they have also given short-shrift to the commonalities between these two classical theorists. This book helps to clarify the relationship between Weberian and Marxist social theory.

As a practical matter, with regard to historically specific phenomena, it sometimes seems that Weber tacitly shared Marx's assessment of the antagonistic relationship between capital and labor. This is especially apparent when Weber is playing the inherently ironic role of a determinedly disinterested value-free social critic.

For example, when Weber visited the United States in 1905, he was interested in studying the peculiarly intense form of American capitalism. Located at Washington University in St. Louis, Weber became interested in the large, privately owned transit system that provided transportation for people throughout the city.

Weber learned that the system had fallen into a bad state of disrepair, and serious accidents were commonplace. The owners of the system had two choices: repair and update the horse-drawn trolleys that moved people from place to place. Or continue to pay damages to passengers who were badly injured and to the families of those who were killed. A cost-benefit analysis showed the latter choice to be less expensive, and so the decision was made. For Weber, this was an obvious outcome: capitalists minimizing costs and maximizing profits, just as their social roles specified.

Weber's contemporary Werner Sombart who was favorably disposed to Marxist social theory, found much the same when he studied coal mining in relatively developed capitalist countries, including the U.S. Accidents resulting in injury or death occurred at a much higher rate in U.S. mines than in mines located in European countries. For those of us who lived through the the 1970's and 1980's such stories may have a familiar ring. The Ford Pinto was an inexpensive and popular subcompact. It's design, however, was flawed in that the gas tank, located in the back of the car, was likely to explode if the car were rear-ended

Ford knew about this design flaw, but according to the company's cost-benefit calculations, it would cost less to pay off victims of exploding gas tanks (or their survivors) than to redesign the Pinto. So the design flaw stayed in place, and again, rational calculability in dollar terms took precedence over other condiderations.

In spite of their commonalities, however, Weber spoke in terms of organized structures of domination, such as that which gave functional control over labor, rather than antagonistic social classes at war with each other for resources of all kinds. In addition, Weber emphasized that the rationally calculable control of labor by capital was essential for efficient production in a capitalist society. Moreover, Weber objected to Marx's assignment of priority to material and experiential phenomena rather than cultural prescriptions, proscriptions, and meanings.

As we have seen, however, Weber's and Marx's treatments of concrete instances of social organization under capitalism sometimes have more in common than is often acknowledged. There is, in fact, a good deal of class conflict, as Marx understood that phenomenon in Weber's social thought. This is something that Gerth and Mills account enables the reader to discern, but which was long hidden in Parsons' early translations.

There are a few mug cake cookbooks on the market right now. The reason I chose this one was because the recipes were simpler than others (no butter or eggs). I tried the chocolate mug cake in the book preview and it was delicious! It tasted more like a brownie than a chocolate cake but tasty nonetheless. Since I don't like my cakes too sweet, I modified the recipe simply by adding less chocolate.

If you go on Kirbie's Cravings (author's blog), you can check out a bunch of her other mug cake recipes if you're still on the fence about purchasing this. Lots of easy recipes with pretty pictures; I spent hours sifting through her posts! I can tell the author has put a lot of thought into creating the recipes for both her blog and this cookbook so I'm always happy to support such commitment.

The book is flexibound so it's paperback, but it's of very high quality. The flexibound also means that you can lay the book down flat and refer back to it when you're baking. The pages are colorful and include lots of high resolution photos. I can't wait to start making more mug cakes, especially the savory ones!

Deliciously comprehensive

My wife bought this book and yesterday we enjoyed our first mug cake, chocolate Nutella brownie! As promised, it took less than five minutes to make and it was amazing. Can't wait to try more! We also have two small kids, and many of these recipes are perfect because they're fast, a five year old can do much of the work, and they don't make a crazy amount (sometimes when our daughter wants to bake, we have 58 cookies too many).

Love the different sections in the book - the recipes go way beyond the recipes available online: 21 and over mug cakes, savory mug cakes, breakfast mug cakes, gluten free, cookie mug cakes, all in addition to your basic delicious dessert mug cakes. If you like fresh baked goods and don't have much time, this book is for you!

They aren't perfect, but they are very convenient.

For using only handful of ingredients (quite literally) and taking just a few minutes to make, these cakes are pretty good. I wouldn't say they were the best cakes, but they are just so convenient and I haven't had a bad one yet.

They tend to come out a little rubbery as compared to other cake, but are still very tasty. They also don't look like the photos and may not be appealing on their own, but some whip cream hides that well. I wouldn't plan on serving them at a dinner party unless you find a solution to the rubbery problem (different flour?) and you will spend more time topping one than making one. But once again: very convenient and they do taste good.

My wife likes them so much she ordered the book for one of her pregnant friends who also enjoys them.

... Das frage ich mich jetzt nach der Lekt�re des neuesten Thrillers von Colin Cotterill. Denn ... um Pak Nam in der Provinz von Chumphon, einer Perle des l�ndlichen K�stengebietes Sued-Thailands geht ein Axtmoerder um. Der an seinem neuen Hobby auch noch echten Gefallen findet. Und unsere rasende Reporterin Jimm Juree und ihre so herrlich anomale
Familie stecken nat�rlich mittendrin. Und auch die Elemente bedrohen die familiaere Idylle...
Seit Mair - Mutter von Dreien und manchmal etwas "vergesslich" - die Perle des Nordens Chiang Mai hinter sich liess, um nach Jahrzehnten endlich dem Ruf der Liebe zum Vater ihrer Kinder zu folgen, ist nichts mehr wie es war f�r die Familie Juree. Unsere einst so glamour�se Journalistin muss f�r die Chumphon Gazette Skandale ausgraben und ausschlachten und da kommt der englische Schriftsteller Conrad Coralbank gerade recht. Ein Interview-Termin wird angesetzt, um N�heres �ber das Entschwinden der jungen Thai-Gattin des Autors zu erfahren. Nun ist diese allerdings nicht die einzige Frau, die in der "Metropole" Pak Nam unauffindbar scheint. Eine Frau Dr Sumlok, vehemente Verfechterin des Stillens, legte sich mit der schweizer Weltfirma "Medley" - die mit dem (hier blauen) B�ren - wegen skrupelloser Geschaeftemacherei mit Babymilchpulver an. Nachdem sie bei einer der Werbeveranstaltungen zum "Mythos Brust" einen kleinen Skandal verursachte und entfernt wurde, ist sie nicht mehr aufgetaucht. Nur mysteri�se SMSse an ihre Krankenschwester Da, sonst nichts. So macht sich unsere unermuedliche Jimm auch diesen Fall zu eigen, obwohl sie eigentlich neben ihrer Arbeit im armseligen, am Rande des Ruins stehenden Familien-Resort ja auch noch als "Schilder-Doktor" ein gutes Auskommen hat. Sie korrigiert unfreiwillig witzige Ergebnisse von �bersetzungen vom Thai ins Englische. �ber jedem Kapitel findet sich so ein authentisches Beispiel. Doch das Interview mit dem weltberuehmten Autor laotischer Kriminalromane C. C. aka Conrad Coralbank ist nur der Anfang einer kurzen aber st�rmischenBeziehung.
Allerdings bahnt sich in Sued-Thailand in der Weihnachtszeit, die fast immer gleichzeitig schwere Monsune bringt, eine Naturkatastrophe in Form eines Jahrhundertsturmes an. Doch der Axtmoerder hat Jimm gemahnt, mehrmals ernsthaft gewarnt, doch unsere Heldin ist nicht zu bremsen. Mit Hilfe ihrer Geschwister Sissi - Ex-Miss Transgender in einer Midlife Crisis - und Arny - so genannt zu Ehren von Schwarzy - will sie unbedingt hinter das Verschwinden von Dr Sumlok bringen. Und bringt sich damit in t�dliche Gefahr. Doch waehrenddessen bringen Gro�vater Jah und Kumpels einen weitere ganz andere Art von Serient�ter zur Strecke. Das alles klangvoll garniert mit dem Toben der Natur, die f�r alle ihre Weihnachtsueberraschungen bereit h�lt...

Fuer mich ganz klar ein weiterer Treffer des Autors der Dr Siri-Krimis Colin Cotterill, der die von ihm so geliebte "n�rdlichste Provinz Suedthailands" ein weiteres (letztes ?) Mal verewigt. Lesenswert wie immer schon wegen der farbigen Charaktere, der unverhuellten Gesellschaftskritik - diesmal gegen Gro�konzerne des Lebensmittelmarktes - und der gewohnten unerwarteten Wendungen. Ein spannender Krimi, um die Wartezeit bis zum allerneuesten Dr Siri im Original "Six and a Half Deadly Sins" in diesem Mai zu ueberbruecken. Auch kommt am 29.6. noch die deutsche �bersetzung von "Slash and Burn" als "Dr Siri und der explodierende Drache" heraus. Ein interessantes Jahr f�r Fans dieses so vielseitigen Schriftstellers, der durch seinen ganz eigenen Stil und Humor zu fesseln versteht. Von mir eine klare Leseempfehlung f�r alle Krimifans mit Sinn f�r Mr Cotterills englischen Humor.

Great book!

This book was great for our 8,7,4 year old who are always comparing everything with each other. They enjoyed the illustrations and we had a good discussion about the message of the book. Two of our children have special needs that require some extra attention and this book helped illustrate we love all our children just the same, and give them what they need.

This memorable little book helps break down big topics in a way that's immediately understandable for both adults and children. I went through this book in about thirty minutes, put it down, and an hour later, I was back again. I shared it with a colleague who related a similar experience. We agreed that the value of this book is not limitted to the information provided, which is terriific, but-- in what it compels you to think about and act upon.
