About the Author
Gill Winter has had a varied career. She spent 11 years working for one of New Zealand's premier art institutions, the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, before setting up Flying Piglets, a touring agency for folk and blues musicians. She also worked as marketing manager for two arts festivals, helped on the family pig farm, and volunteered for Trade Aid, New Zealand's biggest fair trade organisation. In 2009 she completed the CELTA qualification in teaching English as a second language. In 2010 she answered an advertisement on 'Dave's ESL Cafe' website for volunteer teachers to work in India, and found herself in Dharamshala. She has since returned to Dharamshala several times, and has written two books about the experience: "Between Monks and Monkeys" and "The Yeti in the Library."

Informative and entertaining!

I was very excited to find this book shortly before I set off for Dharamshala myself. It's full of essential information that I couldn't find anywhere else. I even contacted the author, Gill, prior to my trip to ask some specific questions about the journey from New Delhi to McLeod Ganj. (She posts an email address in the book where you can contact her). She not only responded to my questions, but invited me to contact her when I got there, as she was on her way back herself to teach for another three months! I met Gill and some of her friends in McLo and they were such a great help to me while I was in town, answering questions from "Where can I buy a teapot?" to "How do I get a local phone?".

Gill's book really gave me a great sense of what it's like to be in McLo, and I highly recommend it to anyone planning to go there. I also recommend the book to anyone who's interested in the Tibetan people, as it really gives you a good, true picture of what the Tibetan refugees in India are like. They are an amazing people, and the book will give you insight into their culture, struggles, and triumphs. Happy reading!

Reads like a dry memoir or a lively travel guide

While the actual writing and lack of correct citations leave much to be desired, the book accomplishes its goal if you are seeking a decent travelogue of McLo/Dhasa. I agree with the other reviewer in that there is much found herein that can not be found in any guide book or travel website - lots of helpful gems that will aid the wary traveler. The book is definitely worth the price, and worth your time to read if you are looking for a recent first-hand account of a westerner. I give it 3 stars because the writing itself wasn't my taste - it reads very much like an informal conversation rather than a written narrative - however the book is very helpful.

Too Much Fluff

I first learned PHP from Luke Welling and Laura Thomson's excellent "PHP and MySQL Web Development," and bought 'MySQL/PHP Database Applications' to provide an alternative perspective on solving problems. Unfortunately, this book doesn't offer enough content to warrant its high price.
A full 58 pages is devoted to a PHP function reference which is a bit of a joke because PHP has one of the better online function references available. Code examples are printed with very large font again taking up more space than is necessary.
Most important, though, some of these examples are a little bit suspect.
They present a Catalog application written using Object Oriented Programming (OOP). This would have been valuable except that the classes they create are so specific that they couldn't be re-used -- basically negating the value of OOP to begin with.
They do provide a couple of examples of good and bad relational database schema, but that isn't really worth the cost of this book.

Amazon makes you leave a heading and a comment so I am typing this up to say its a good product and does what it says. If you are reading this, buy it. I don't leave 5 stars unless the product exceeds my demanding expectations. If it falls short of doing 100% of what it says, I leave 1 star.

Loved it!

I'm puzzled by the negative reviews. I'm a 30 year vet in computing, recently retired, and doing web/tech computing part time. I've needed to grasp parts of computing that I haven't been involved with, and boy did these guys get it right!

I loved the comment about "The bulk of this chapter is for those of you who have made it to the early 21st century without working with relational databases!" That's me! And the writing was just right in terms of code hints and kinks along with clear explainations of database concepts.

I'm reading the first edition, saw the second edition was out, and ordered it.

I will agree, however, that there are *many* editing mistakes where they mistake terms or have errors in their tables/code. Hopefully the 2nd edition solves this.

Excellent Content, Should Have Been Hardcover

I was a little unsure what I was getting when I pre-ordered this -- was it the complete novel with handwritten notes along the way in a 784 page softcover? Softcover??

Well, Coppola's "Bible" (as it was referred to in 2009's Annotated Godfather) was FFC's dissection of the novel, breaking down the scenes and noting filming ideas. That alone, with also the many, many full page photos (B&W and color) and an intro by Coppola, make this a must-have for all Godfather scholars and film buffs.

My only disappointment is that it's bound in a flimsy pseudo hardcover that's easily bendable. For the price, this really should've been a true hardcover. My first copy had bent corners and a torn spine, but its replacement was acceptable.

Five stars for the content, -1 for the binding.

Since it's a gift it's a bit of a disappointment.

The book itself is incredible and an absolute work of art. I bought it as a Christmas gift for my boyfriend - a huge Coppola fan - and can't wait to give it to him. My 4-star review (instead of the 5 I want to give it) is due to the seller. While the book came fast, the front cover is scuffed with marks I can't get off including on the gold lettering. Since it's a gift it's a bit of a disappointment.

Great book, very well written

Great book, very well written! It's a thorough analysis of Donald Trump's campaign. I like the fact that author doesn't jump directly to conclusions, he analyzes Trump's behavior step-by-step, including body language during interviews and speeches.
I can recommend it to everyone, even those not interested in politics and the ongoing elections in US, as this is a good analysis not only of a presidential candidate, but of a very successful businessmen.
Good read!
