Best Santa book in universe

This is the best book our family has ever seen about Santa Claus!! I vote it ten stars, not just five. This book is truly off the charts for its cleverness, terrific illustrations, inventiveness and sheer Christmas joy. I do not know why some US publisher has not bought the rights and made it into the classic it deserves to be, and is in our family. My Son was given this book at his first Christmas. Both he and my daughter and I, their Mom, have enjoyed this book every year since then. I would love to be able to obtain more copies of it to hand down to my grandkids and so on. It gives very detailed and often quite funny "true" information about Santa and his whole village at the North Pole. It is quite an operation, believe me! Santa has his sleigh but also has a fleet of red airplanes with reindeer logos on them. The drawings are so full of detail and funny things going on that it keeps both kids and grown-ups exclaiming and laughing. For example, birds sit on elves' noses. Baby elves suck pacifiers. The elf band is playing "Ob-la-di, ob-la da"; the printer elves tie up their beards around their heads so they do not get them in the ink, and in the carpenter shop, there is a sign saying, "safety first." There are even elves who spray paint the toys. So hilarious, as a little animal watching this gets sprayed too. The elf children's classroom often was intently examined by my kids. The book is Scandinavian in origin I think, and that is why it is so hard to find now here in the USA. The outfits and scenery, houses and huts are Norwegian or Swedish, and the costumes have all sorts of decorative Nordic touches. Each elf seems to have a different personality. My kids always liked the picture of the elves getting ready for bed--in their bunk house they are bedding down, and one is reading the newspaper, one is watching a portable TV, and one is about to brush his teeth. The loner elf likes to sleep in a simple haystack--"to each his own," my kids would always chime in with the narrative. This book is so clever and if you can ever find it you will want to keep it forever. It has a humorous charm that even very tiny children will enjoy, and it will win your heart. It is unlike any other Christmas book I have ever seen in the US. My kids are now 19 and 16 and they still get it out every holiday season to enjoy the pictures and simple story once again. It is simply precious!

The only Christmas book you'll ever need!

My son was given this book by his German grandmother for Christmas, and it's the most interesting Christmas book I've ever seen. It explains everything kids need to know about where Santa Claus comes from - but in a modern approach: there are high-tech elves, Santa distributes presents in planes because his sleigh can't cope with the magnitude of presents anymore and parents have to buy some gifts for their children at the toy store because he doesn't have the facilities to make them.
I especially love the book's explanation of why many Europeans are visited by Santa on Christmas Eve (as was the tradition in my German family), and Americans and other nations open their gifts on Christmas morning - Santa does have to fly further from Finland, after all, so he doesn't get to the US until the middle of the night. Ingenious - my son will never be confused again!
The illustrations alone are worth a look, every time you open the book you'll see something new!

This is my favorite christmas story. I have read it every Christmas for 20 years. The illustrations are wonderful. Everytime you read it you find something new in the pictures.

What it lacks in depth, it more than makes up for in typos.

Would not recommend this product for use in preparing for the CCRN exam. One major flaw is the book is full of typos. Almost every section of the book has grammatical and textual errors, as if it was not proofwritten at all. Really distracted by the sheer amount of typos, especially in preparing for an an exam that has a bearing on peoples' careers. Also disappointed by the lack of depth this book offered. It seemed to be a very cursory review and there are definitely other materials out there that will provide better review.

Terrible. Not enough content to prepare you for CCRN ...

Terrible. Not enough content to prepare you for CCRN exam. Found mistakes and misinformation in the print that I am shocked made it past editing! This book would be great for a nursing student in an ADN program as review for anatomy and physiology, not for an experienced critical care nurse to take the CCRN exam. The practice tests in the back of the book also have the answers right below the questions making it hard to take without seeing the answers. The overall reviews for this book are misleading, I strongly advise purchasing a different prep book for CCRN certification.

This book was dumbed down way too much for a critical care nurse. It would never prepare you to pass the ccrn exam. Many mistakes and errors were found in the practice exam.

Truly filled with wonder

"Without supernatural assistance, our fellow creatures can tell us the most beautiful stories, and that means true stories, because the truth about nature is always far more beautiful even than what our great poets sing of it, and they are the only real magicians that exist." This book is wonderful in the original sense of that word, filled with wonder, and this quote from the Preface explains one reason this is so. Another reason is the sense that one is sitting peacefully on a pleasant evening while a true raconteur quietly meanders through his unexpectedly mesmerizing tales.

I originally picked up this book looking for material to liven up a natural history essay on shrews; those tiny overlooked but wide-spread creatures better known as metaphors than animals. This classic book from a legendary naturalist includes one of the very few bits of writing on shrews outside formal scientific literature. Surely, I thought, Lorenz would have something interesting to say. In fact, he had many interesting things to say on shrews. After finding that he could tell an entertaining and informative tale that brought these apparently unexciting animals to life on the page, I naturally had to start back at the beginning and read the book through.

Each chapter treats a different topic and can stands on its own. But read together they bring an understanding greater than their sum. Lorenz's skilled storytelling gradually reveals that what at first appeared to be many different threads are all actually part of one wonderful fabric.

Konrad Lorenz was one of THE three European founders of ethology (the study of the natural behavior of animals in their environments). Nikolas Tinbergen, Von Frisch, and Lorenz were co-awarded the Nobel Prize in 1973 for their preceding bodies of work which created this new scientific discipline.

This was extremely significant to the course of American psychology which, until that time, had grown increasingly dominated by learning theory and the laboratory method. American psychology, influenced by the achievements of physics and medicine,etc., preferred studying behavior under controlled, laboratory conditions as the means for getting nearer "ultimate truth", which, at that time, was thought to almost always involve learning at its core--in accord with the principles and theories of famous American learning theorists such as Thorndike, Watson, Skinner, Hull, et al. Comparative psychology was the American branch that studied similarities and differences between animal species but controlled problems in a laboratory setting were greatly preferred. Observations of behavior, while valuable for designing later lab experiments, were considered less rigorous.

So the truths Lorenz, Tinbergen, Von Frisch and their other European naturalist colleagues reported was as significant as the child's observation of the Emperor's new clothes. The truth of a significant lack was revealed. The laboratory method could not examine or reveal all important aspects of animal behavior; the lab method obscured or eliminated those behaviors occurring in natural settings.

Lorenz and Tinbergen discovered, explored, and brought imprinting to the attention of the scientific behavioral world. Imprinting is the lasting (often irreversible) effects of early experience (occuring within a critical period of development) on the later behavior of animals. This contrasted with the view of normal learning theories which found the strength of a response was mainly a function of the number of practice trials. (Von Frisch's work was in understanding the "language" of bees.)

Lorenz's "King Solomon's Ring" was a significant contribution that enabled lay people to understand the importance of such observations and prepared (sometimes excited) beginning students in the behavioral sciences to take psychology in new directions. Within a few years, learning theory no longer formed the spinal column and much of the skeletal structure of American psychology.

I was a psychology graduate student during these years and the laboratory instructor for my university's professor of comparative psychology. It was an exciting time, seeing the old "truths" and axioms become overthrown and helping to search for new ones.

The "Ring" is still a delightful and interesting read and inclines the reader to look with different eyes at the behavior of our animal friends. Possibly because I've kept current on research on dogs, I think it's weakest chapter is "The Covenant", Ch. 10, which is on dogs. Here Lorenz decides that most domestic dogs descended from the jackal while a few also descended from the wolf. Having advanced that thesis, he then describes in detail the dichotomy of personality and behavior to which these two antecedents lead and which can be commonly found in all their descendents.

WRONG!

For the last 40 years, we've become increasingly certain that almost all domestic dogs descended from wolves. Lorenz speculates an incorrect premise and then proceeds to elaborate (with charm and erroneous fact) on this in great detail. It's interesting and illuminating to see how wrong Lorenz can be in some areas and so right (or right enough) in others.

So read the "Ring" to understand its and its author's deserved place in the history of behavioral sciences. Read it to increase your observational powers of your animal friends. But please do not read it as divine, ordained truth. Many thousands of scientists have since built on the foundations that Lorenz, Tinbergen, & Von Frisch built along with the contributions of Watson, Pavlov, Skinner, Hull, and others. (Serpell's "The Domestic Dog" provides a good source on more recent information about dogs.)

This attractive dictionary presents the details and styles of residential architecture in the United States through over 500 annotated drawings. Skibinski and Lam base these examples on magazine illustrations and measured drawings from the Historic American Buildings Survey. Particularly useful are the clearly delineated illustrations that focus on construction technology (the anatomy of a double-hung sash and a balloon frame building, for example). Carley's (The Backyard Book, LJ 5/1/88) text would have benefited from a more expansive discussion of regional variations in style and specific information with which to date buildings. While the most useful book of this type remains Virginia and Lee McAlester's Field Guide to American Houses (LJ 8/84), this dictionary, designed for use by homeowners and curious tourists, is a welcome addition to the field. This collection of detailed black-and-white drawings of houses and other domestic buildings (barns, garages, gazebos) is presented in 12 chapters arranged chronologically, from Native American dwellings to contemporary trends. Each chapter is introduced by one page of text, and additional comments accompany the illustrations. Each drawing is labeled with the names of various architectural details.

Several examples are provided for each time period. For example, seven drawings reflect Federal-style homes in the chapter on neoclassical styles. The section on prefab housing in the postwar chapter includes traditional kit structures as well as Quonset huts and mobile homes. Some drawings highlight special interior or exterior features: fireplaces, staircases, gates, and so on. A series of inserts called "anatomies" look at basic construction methods: trusses, double-hung sashes, log notching. Floor plans are often provided. One helpful feature is that common usage is included in parenthesis next to technical terms that accompany illustrations; for example, split-wood shingles are also defined as shakes, a thatched sun shelter is also identified as a ramada.

Intended for architecture students and design professionals, this book could also be used as a resource for secondary school American history units. The first chapter covers Native American dwellings such as Algonquin wigwams, Apache wikiups, Navaho hogans, and Tlingit plank houses, and chapter 8 deals with folk and frontier houses. The index includes all the terms used as labels.

A better choice for public and school collections is the Eyewitness Visual Dictionary of Buildings (Dorling Kindersley, 1992), which uses photographs as well as illustrations and spans all sorts of structures from ancient through modern times. Other visual dictionaries, such as the Macmillan Visual Desk Reference (1993) and What's What: A Visual Glossary of the Physical World (Hammond, 1981), also include sections on architecture that satisfy many browsing and general reference needs. However, as a specialized resource, Carley's unique graphic guide will be a welcome addition to architecture and design collections.

An Ambitious Field Guide to Domestic Architecture

Although the illustrations in this book are not as beautiful as the ones in Lester Walker's "American Homes", this book is very ambitious in its presentations. Many field guides to American homes concentrate solely on identifying a style. Usually, there are only a few brief descriptions of the architectural details that help define a style.

What makes "The Visual Diction of American Domestic Architecture" such a pleasure is the sheer ambition of its coverage. Not only are there detailed descriptions of building exteriors, there are also detailed desciptions of interior features. As an example, not many field guides detail interior framing plans or such important features like staircases and fireplaces. If that were not enough, there are also some representative floor plans.

I have been collecting field guides for a number of years and this is one of the best. If you want to go beyond picking out key features of a distinct architectural style and want to delve deeper into building details, this is the book for you. Highly recommended.

Very good illustrated guide to residential American architecture

This is a very good guide to residential architecture in the United States, particularly for students learning the vocabulary of cornices, mansard roofs, porticoes, etc. Every pages includes multiple black-and-white line drawings illustrating whole buildings and architectural details, and each line drawing is clearly labeled with all applicable terms. It also includes many floor plans that demonstrate the changes in American homes over the years.

This "dictionary" is not in the traditional dictionary format. It is instead organized chronologically, beginning with Native American dwellings and concluding with contemporary homes. However, there is an index for looking up specific terms, if you want to flip right to a (pictorial) definition. Text boxes provide additional information about architectural styles and details, along with some historical and geographical context.

For students of architecture, this should not be the only architectural dictionary in the collection, but I do recommend including it.

I guess it isn't an easy thing to compose an illustrative guide on such complicated and multilayered portion of Architecture as American domestic styles, but all are included here: easily recognizable types, details, even construction methods! Special thanks to the Illustrator: the pictures are neither "overillustrated" nor of too "academic" appearance - just restrained professional still artistic graphic. As an international Architect often working for an American architectural firm I will surely make use of it.

There are many parallels between allergic and autoimmune responses. Both are considered hypersensitivity responses: pathologies that are elicited by an exuberant reaction to antigens that do not pose any inherent danger to the organism. Although mast cells have long been recognized as central players in allergy, only recently has their role in autoimmunity become apparent. Because of the commonalities of these responses, much of what we have learned about the underlying mast cell–dependent mechanisms of inflammatory damage in allergy and asthma can be used to understand autoimmunity. Here we review mast cell biology in the context of autoimmune disease. We discuss the huge diversity in mast cell responses that can exert either proinflammatory or antiinflammatory activity. We also consider the myriad factors that cause one response to predominate over another in a particular immune setting.

About the Author

From an early age, David Allen Hulse diligently studied the alphabets of the ancient world. As a child, David possessed a great affinity for the alphabets of Egypt, Phoenicia, and Greece.

In college, a reading of MacGregor Mathers' Kabbalah Unveiled opened up the Hebrew alphabet-number technique of Qabalistic research. After Hebrew, many other ancient languages were decoded and studied, including Sanskrit and Tibetan. In 1979, a discovery led to the need to capture the extent of all prior Quabalistic research into one great reference work. Research is still being carried out to discover new definitions for the number series as well as new magickal systems.

I had given my original copy years ago to my niece. I really missed it so I purchased this one. It is a wonderful book full of metaphysical information.

Great despite the influence of that piece of human garbage Crowley

I find this and its companion volume absorbing and informative, despite the influence of Crowley, whom I abhor. I also take Enochian to be somewhat of an overrated Elizabethan fraud by Kelley on a gullible Dee, though it has a certain quaint interest. Excellent material is in here on cuneiform, cabala, Arabic, Indian, Tibetan, and Central Asian symbolism -- and an excellent rather long explanation of Chinese and Japanese systems like the I Ching and the numbering of characters. It is a popular treatment, on the part of an occult true believer; that said, it is a valuable resource on the esoteric meaning of scripts and numbers, and one that I think will engross most readers at all interested in such subjects. I just tune the Thelemite nonsense out as much as possible.

A must for students of the Western Esoteric Traditions

Of all the many esoteric books published throughout the current Magickal Revival, there are none that can match the sheer comprehensive magnitude of David Allen Hulse's two volume The Key of It All, with Book One - The Eastern Mysteries published in 1993, and Book Two - The Western Mysteries published in 1994. These absolutely indispensable books catalogue, distill, and synthesize the true alphabet symbology of every Eastern and Western, Magickal and Mystical Tradition, including the Tarot. While it deals with many foreign languages and alphabets, even the beginning student will find this work easily navigable and accessible, for Hulse takes the reader step by step through the historic symbology of number and letter, transliterating the foreign scripts into English, and provides copious tables and illustrations, as well a very readable commentary with each of the world's 13 great Magickal Languages. If any one work could possibly serve as the catalyst to unify the many World Traditions into one singular Tradition, it would have to be Hulse's The Key of It All. Hulse essentially shows how each of these 13 World Traditions of alphabet and number in fact serve as a Qabalah or Tarot for each of the cultures they once, or still, represent. In many ways this book is a great Thesaurus of the World Traditions, allowing for a comparison of the synonymous metaphors which link them all in form and function. In fact, in Book Two - The Western Mysteries, Hulse offers His A = 1 code for the English Alphabet, along with some of the major Thelemic and Qabalistic proofs of its verity; and yet He wisely leaves the door open for further research into the possibilities of an English Qabalah. He also provides one of the most compelling studies ever undertaken to root out the true order and allocations of the Tarot upon the Tree of Life, and serves as S. L. Mathers greatest champion in revealing how this previously unheralded Master's work has formed the foundation of all subsequent Tarot symbology. His work with Mathers' Golden Dawn attributions, as well as Waite's Tarot symbology truly has no equal in the world of Occult literature.
