They are organised in 14 themes, presenting the latest developments in physical modelling technology, modelling techniques and sensors, through a wide range of soil-structure interaction problems, including shallow and deep foundations, offshore geotechnics, dams and embankments, excavations and retaining structures and slope stability. Fundamental aspects of earthquake engineering, geohazards, ground reinforcements and improvements, and soil properties and behaviour are also covered, demonstrating the increasing complexity of modelling arising from state-of-the-art technological developments and increased understanding of similitude principles. A special theme on education presents the latest developments in the use of physical modelling techniques for instructing undergraduate and postgraduate students in geotechnical engineering.

About the Author
Christophe Gaudin is a Professorial Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia and the Deputy Director of the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems. Professor Gaudin has a vast experience on geotechnical physical modelling, serving on the editorial board of the International Journal of Physical Modelling in Geotechnics, and as core member since 2006 and Chairman since 2010 of the ISSMGE's Technical Committee on Geotechnical Physical Modelling. He has authored more than 120 technical papers over the last 10 years, presenting physical modelling developments and applications for a wide range of geotechnical problems, including retaining structures, offshore anchoring systems and foundation. He has been managing the two geotechnical centrifuges at the University of Western Australia since 2003 providing innovative technical solutions for both research and industry, for which he has delivered 7 conference keynotes and has won 3 awards, including the ICE Bishop Medal.

David White holds the Shell EMI Chair in Offshore Engineering at the University of Western Australia. Professor White has authored more than 180 technical papers including 8 conference keynotes, related to foundations, pipelines and anchoring. He is a strong proponent of geotechnical physical modelling, serving as Secretary of the ISSMGE's Technical Committee on Geotechnical Physical Modelling since 2005. His publications have won 6 awards, including the Telford Premium, the Bishop Medal and the BGA Prize (three times). He was named the 2011 Western Australian Early Career Scientist of the Year and his research projects have attracted 6 industry awards. Professor White acts as a consultant to industry through the Perth-based firm, Advanced Geomechanics, and he has served on the editorial boards of three journals and on two ISO standard committees.

Matthew Field is a film journalist with Cinema Retro magazine and an author, whose books include The Making of The Italian Job and Michael Caine: You’re a Big Man.�He was a consultant on the acclaimed James Bond documentary Everything or Nothing.�Ajay Chowdhury is an attorney and has given legal consultation on motion picture, music, publishing, television, and theatrical projects. He was the associate producer on two feature films and has contributed to numerous books on James Bond including Goldeneye: Where Bond Was Born—Ian Fleming and Jamaica. George Lazenby is an actor who played James Bond in the film On Her Majesty's Secret Service in 1969.

As formulaic as the Bond movies themselves, but studded with memorable movie-making moments

The literary equivalent of binge-watching a James Bond movie marathon, Some Kind of Hero is, perhaps inevitably, as interesting as the Bond movies it reflects the making of, and occasionally plodding at the points where the series plods. Undeniably detailed and well-researched, it outlines the journey of Fleming's secret agent from print to film, in a different era both behind and in front of the camera. And it's as much the story of the films' famed production team of Broccoli and Saltzman as it is Bond's.

The plot twists and story beats, of changing actors and changing cinematic times keep the story moving forward, with enough what-might-have-been sprinkled through the tale to add some fresh notes for fans of the movies. Bond sets we learn, over and over, are very much family affairs. Connery, unsurprisingly, takes himself too seriously (painfully referring to himself as "one" rather than "I" in archive interviews), while Moore takes neither himself nor the films particularly seriously at all (as his entries into the series surely show). George Lazenby, ironically, may have the most interesting tale of all, and the authors have the access to tell it.

Where the book sags is where the series treads water. Despite attempting to scale hew closer to Fleming's vision for the character (something promised at some point by approximately 80% of the movies - the others, like Moonraker, shamelessly playing catch up with then-contemporary hits like Star Wars), late-era Roger Moore entries are documented as little more than locations scouted, title sequences shot, practical jokes played on Eon-family-atmosphere movie sets and movies premiered before assorted royal family members.

The authors may have an uphill job mining something interesting out of the making of these 80's movies, but (and this is my one big critique of Some Kind of Hero) a little more cultural context and movie criticism wouldn't hurt. Simon Winder's The Man Who Saved Britain - A Personal Journey into the Disturbing World of James Bond does a knock-out job of putting Fleming's books into the context of the Britain they sharply contrasted with. Some Kind of Hero provides a little of this -- the movies go from blockbuster-budgeted cartoon capers to more cost-conscious outings re-establishing the character on the shoulders of Pierce Brosnan -- but a little more unvarnished opinion would have nicely complemented the detailed and factual documentation. Individual scripts and productions may be described as have troubled journeys, but the authors seem unwilling to indicate much may be wrong with the finished product.

Of course, it may be the case that the target reader for this book has his (or her, but probably his) own strong opinion of each Bond movie, and little desire to reflect at much length on arguable flaws in, say, Quantum of Solace, Diamonds are Forever or Die Another Day.

As is, what's on offer is a fairly straight retelling, with a mixture of original and archived publicity interviews (where participants are inevitably "thrilled" to be part of the franchise), much detail on the nuts and bolts of Bond movie making, and an evident reverence towards the Broccoli family.

When not covering significant gear changes in the series, the coverage is a solid but little formulaic, much like the Bond series itself (who did the music, how the title sequence was shot, some unnecessarily long plot synopsis). But particularly when mining the nostalgia of the early Connery classics and the various ways ways in which the Bond movies themselves seem to bounce back from the peril of irrelevance, Some Kind of Hero offers several hours of escapist entertainment in a reassuringly familiar cinematic world.

If you think there have been similar books before and you don’t need this one, you will want to think twice. This is the best in years, reinforced by positively surprising information on the world of the gentleman spy, leaving nothing to be desired.
The hardcover book with 600 pages for main text looks like a dictionary. If you have Kindle, the electronic version will be definitely better because you can carry it around without difficulty and Kindle’s search function will be a huge asset for a reference book like this. It comes with an index over 35 pages, but the word you want may not be in it, and you may not have an entire word for a clue. The book is a masterpiece of edutainment for readers in general as well. It gives many accounts of what happens in mega-scale movie production, how the franchise has stayed popular for more than 50 years, and what is not so easy behind the fantasy.
English is not enough. I hope the text will be published in other languages so that the book reaches a far bigger number of potential readers throughout the world.

This book gives some excellent details on how the films came to be

This book gives some excellent details on how the films came to be. It also shows how persistent and patient Cubby Broccoli was in getting the right to make these films and the many compromises that had to me made along the way.

You also get a feel for the great talents that worked on the these films and many were promoted from within. I was happy to learn more about Derek Meddings and the miniatures he built.

You do get a lot of information about the working relationships between the key players but was a little disappointed that there wasn't more insight into the Dalton period. There was a bit like "on the last day of shooting tempers were frayed between Dalton and John Glen" be we are never told why.

And you get a look at excess( a million dollar volcano) and the strangeness of copyright/trademark laws --you write a tune you get royalties, you design the iconic 007 logo and you get 300 dollars.

A very enjoyable read.

It is written at Grade 3 level intentionally, and is not part of the ongoing series of Inspector Gamache/Three Pines novels. When reviewing the book, please keep this in mind. Works for adult learners and all short story fans

As Karen says in her review, this book is part of Good Reads. Since that is listed with the title and I was not familiar with it, I looked it up before I bought the book. It is a great program for adults learning to read to have access to books by top Canadian authors. So, the book is purposely at a different reading level than the other Three Pines Mysteries. And, as the file size indicates, compared to her other books, it is a short story. All that said, it is a great stand-alone short story! It is well-written and satisfying. For an author who usually writes for a different audience, it must be very difficult to adjust the reading skill level. Louise Penny shows her talent again by pulling it off and creating a gem that works for lots of different readers.

Louise Penny never deceives me

One more time I was wrong. The killer was someone else. But that's not the most important part of Penny's stories. It's the emotional and psychological world she puts us in. I sometimes wish I were in that little town and shared the lives the characters live. It's written with love. Even the bad guys are good people that had unsolved anger issues that push them to do the unacceptable. In this case the man hanged wouldn't have been a murderer if justice hadn't been done years before. And Gamache, as always, sees beyond the obvious... A very good read.

Purchased this book for a class. It is pretty easy to read and understand. I thought it was worth buying and it wasn't too expensive so overall a good purchase.

Worst Econ Textbook Yet

If looks could deceive .. wait, they can. Sitting down to read a chapter of this book seems like it's going to be a breeze, but instead you find yourself trudging through a jungle filled with quicksand and bear traps. Bold vocabulary words with vague at best definitions, conveniently not included in the summary. The summaries, by the way, are the only parts of this book worth reading. The author has no concept of how to be concise, and instead every sentence in a chapter is in a struggle to be heard as the most important. It gets better .. the instructor slides provided to go along with your 30 page chapter somehow manage to be 120 sides of irrelevant and unclear examples. In short, if your professor thinks that using this book is a good idea, the class is probably going to be a nightmare (one in which you die of boredom). This is coming from a 4.0 Junior.

I absolutely love the logic of this book's framework

We had several up-ending events in our family life this past year, and this financial guide from Jonathan Clements has been a godsend as we navigated the financial decisions involved. I absolutely love the logic of this book's framework. When I have a specific, urgent question, I can quickly get to the topic I need because of the way the book is organized by theme and sub-topics. In this regard, it differs from all other financial guidebooks I've read. But most important of all, to me, is that the author kept his familiar personal style (I subscribed to the WSJ for two decades mainly to be able to read Clements' weekly WSJ column). My favorite, favorite part of this book is the bit where, after explaining the logic of the advice given on a topic, Clements then includes a personal section on what he actually, in his real life, has done on the matter. Having followed this author's financial writings since the early 1990s, I can tell you that whenever I have diligently and patiently followed his lead, the results have been rewarding. And whenever I have given in to my emotional worries, and deviated from his clear logic, I've come to regret it. The other aspect of this book that is extremely helpful is the detailed teaching of complicated topics in a way that allows all of us regular people out here to truly understand the fundamentals that we have to grasp if we want to successfully manage our finances.

Easy amazing read for everybody. The sooner the better; this book has it all.

Wow, talk about an easy read. Mr. Clements really broke down the world of finances' into many different areas and keeps his explanations short and to the point. He even lets you know when a part of the book will have some boring math formulas so you can skim it if it's too much for you. Anyway the main reason for the purchase of this book was to find out about social security, its new rule and when the best time to start drawing for my wife and me. This book gave many examples and on top of that gave a website that you can go to and with little information about your age and current income will tell you how much you will draw if you choose to draw at different ages. Yes, other sites do this but none of them factored in the best time for a lower earning spouse to draw on the higher earning spouses account. the site even calculated the difference you will make by drawing at different ages. Another great point for me was his advice on how to "Rebalance" my TSP. I did this and within 5 days earned over $5,000.00. My account balance has been rising daily. This book covers almost everything and the best part is that it is done in very short sections that gets the reader attention quickly and keeps it for the entire section. He even starts out by telling you how to navigate the book. There are many referrals to different companies and websites for further information. I was able to come up with several categories I was interested in and made a list of different websites to go to for more info or to possibly purchase financial products. I would recommend this book to everyone, trust me it covers anything you can think of when it comes to finances. I'm giving one to my 17 year old granddaughter. A Practical Financial Guru has Reappeared

I followed Jonathan Clements for many years through his Wall St. Journal (WSJ) column. In my opinion he had the clear straightforward answers to everyday financial questions that everyone encounters. I lost a compass for my financial life when he left the WSJ and I was so happy to see that he has reappeared with his Money Guide series. Now I have a single reference guide to pull off of my shelf when I have a question about a financial issue. This is far more effective than trying to locate the appropriate yellowing WSJ clipping that I have kept on file over the years.

How much do I treasure Mr. Clements' advice? Well, my son graduated from college last spring and he now has enough money to make his first stock investment. He conferred with me over the past few days about how to go about making the best decision. Once we had talked through what he should do and he had made a decision he placed a trading order. He then asked me whether I could recommend a book that he could consult to get further advice. I pulled my copy of "Money Guide 2016" from my desk, held it up to my video conference camera, and told him that I would order a copy for him as soon as we finished our video conference. I did.

As you might have guessed, my investing advice was heavily influenced by years of following the insights and recommendations of Jonathan Clements. I recommend that you avail yourself of his knowledge as well.
