I hated Gone Girl

Thankfully I ignored the comparisons. The Good Girl definitely has a vibe similar to Gone Girl. Missing girl. Multiple narratives. The difference is I hated all the Gone Girl characters. (except perhaps the sister) I hated them and waited for every one of their lies and manipulations to be punished. The ending fell sadly short. I was left with no satisfaction. No, or little, retribution.

The Good Girl is the polar opposite. I really liked the characters. Or most of them. I felt their struggles were real. Their interactions were real. The bad guys were developed enough to identify and dislike them, but the story is not about the bad guys. It's about surviving. Surviving trauma the began before and ended well after a kidnapping.

p.s. the ending is thoroughly satisfying

I read somewhere that this book would have a plot-twist that like Gone Girl. Was very disappointed. The book is okay, but simple. There are many plot holes that I could not get past, and by the end I was un-amused. It's a very predictable book.

The Mediocre Novel

The Good Girl -- I cannot help but wonder if the title were chosen so that potential readers would associate it with Gone Girl. Who knows? One thing I do know is that this novel is a middling thriller about a missing girl. Mia is a twenty-something, estranged from her wealthy family, who suddenly disappears. The novel shifts back and forth in time and shifts perspective as well between three of the characters--Mia's mother, Mia's kidnapper and the detective trying to solve Mia's disappearance. The end result of the kidnapping, which I won't give away here, is revealed very early on in the novel, which left me wondering: why am I reading this novel? At the end, there is an unanticipated twist--so unanticipated as to be a little useless. Skip this one and read The Girl on the Train, or Gone Girl, if you are looking for a good psychological thriller. This one is neither good nor thrilling.

some good stuff. most i already knew

My dad is a lawyer and didn't teach me anything except work hard in school so when you grow up you can pay someone well to do handy work for you.

I like to do my own work and am a mechanical engineer.

This book had some good stuff, but most of it I learned in the boy scouts. The non-handy stuff I learned from my dad.

There was some good handy stuff that I didn't know. But this is a small book and not a serious self-improvement book. This would be a better becoming a man present for a 16 year old or younger boy.

I brought this book home for my husband, but I actually read it first! It was full of humor, as well as tips on how to navigate your way through life. And yes, as a woman, I still felt the need to read this. While it is indeed awesome for a man to tie his own tie, it can be extremely sexy and intimate for the woman in his life to do it for him. And I also might need too know how to carve a turkey or change a flat tire. All in all, it's an entertaining read, full of useful, or at the least, interesting tidbits. The reason I didn't give it a higher rating is that I wanted more.

Lord Alexander finds the small child to be his ward is enchanting when he takes her into his home when she was nine. Perhaps spirited would have been a more appropriate adjective as she grows up, seeming to test him at every turn. At nineteen she is informed that it is time she be wed. Determined is another word for the very beautiful, woman and Cassia soon proves she is not an easy woman to impress. It is only when she is introduced to a man that does not seem interested in the rude young woman, and only when he is stronger than her own spirit does she realize that quite possibly she has met her match. This is one of the books in the Medieval Maidens boxed set. It is very well written and an absolute delight to read. Highly recommend for anyone that likes their heroines soft and spirited and their men dominant and caring

Love this story

Cassandra, or rather Cassia, lives with her guardian, Lord Alexander. We start the story with her being birched by Lord Alexander for kissing a groom. But, that story is not true. She had her maid tell Lord Alexander that so she could get disciplined. She has discovered that she enjoys being birched by Lord Alexander. So, Lord Alexander feels that he needs to find someone for her to mar even though he has feelings for her. Cassia does not want to marry, so she finds fault with all of her suitors. But, then she meets Willhelm and she discovers that maybe she does want to marry. Alexander and William come to an agreement and Cassia goes to Willhem’s home or a week to see if she can be obedient. Many more spankings occur and there is a HEA. Love this story! I give this story 5 stars.

Cassia is an unusual woman for her time. She is a woman who knows exactly what she wants and is determined to get it. As a young girl, Cassia becomes aware of her arousal during a spanking by her guardian. As she grows older, she uses bad behavior to ensure she gets spanked to have these erotic moments. When her guardian looks for a husband for her, Cassia continues her bad behavior to ward off any marriage to a man. Finally, she meets Graf and goes too far. It was fun reading about a man who refused to spank for bad behavior, but spanked for good behavior. It all comes good at the end with everyone getting what they deserved.

This is a draft, not a final product

Simply put, this is the equivalent of someone's dissertation in draft form. The photos are interesting, but the text is nowhere as sexy as the title makes it sound. It is very dry and academic in nature. Not compelling even for the educated reader. There are numerous grammatical errors. For the reader who wants to be enticed, this is not the book you are looking for.

Its often hard to put into words one's relationship with self and God and our reason for being. The longing for love and the moments of pure grace that fill our hearts, with the simplest of joys that remind us of the unjourneying I need to take in order to feel God in my being.
This book evoked a deep sense of gratitude the words and images it created, short stories and poetry stirred my heart with an understanding of our deepest yearning. Thank you Janaka.....

In cities around the world, individuals and groups are reclaiming and creating urban sites, temporary spaces and informal gathering places. These ‘insurgent public spaces’ challenge conventional views of how urban areas are defined and used, and how they can transform the city environment. No longer confined to traditional public areas like neighbourhood parks and public plazas, these guerrilla spaces express the alternative social and spatial relationships in our changing cities.

With nearly twenty illustrated case studies, this volume shows how instances of insurgent public space occur across the world. Examples range from community gardening in Seattle and Los Angeles, street dancing in Beijing, to the transformation of parking spaces into temporary parks in San Francisco.

Drawing on the experiences and knowledge of individuals extensively engaged in the actual implementation of these spaces, Insurgent Public Space is a unique cross-disciplinary approach to the study of public space use, and how it is utilized in the contemporary, urban world. Jeffrey Hou is Professor and Chair of Landscape Architecture at the University of Washington, Seattle. His research and practice focus on design activism and engaging marginalized social groups in the making of public space.
