Living the Chosen and Cherished Life

Kimberly Hahn has developed a beautiful study for women of all ages that helps us see how God created us and in what way we can live our life to the fullest as wives and mothers. She helps young women prepare for marriage, she helps women bring more to their marriage than they perhaps thought about, given the culture we live in, and she helps mothers raise their children to cherish their purity and to become good spouses themselves. She speaks with clarity and with experience and is someone that we can trust, knowing that she lives what she teaches. The DVD series allows us to have her into our homes and share her knowledge of Scripture as it relates to women, marriage, and family. Kimberly touches our hearts, whatever our age may be. She is a treasure to Christianity!

Balanced Resource

Proverbs 31: 10-12, the basis for this work, quotes the mother of Lemuel, King of Massa, giving her son guidance on choosing an appropriate bride. Chosen and Cherished, based on these sections from Proverbs, grew out of bible study Kimberly Hahn has offered for years to Franciscan University students. The verses describe the worthy wife as more valuable than pearls, an unfailing prize, and one who brings good rather than evil to her husband.

Each of the six parts takes its title from a verse in Proverbs 31 and is broken into two chapters that feature Hahn's experiences as wife and mother, additional Scripture passages, and Church teachings. This structure provides an opportunity for Hahn to address such issues as premarital sex, adultery, divorce, contraception, and abortion. She also offers practical advice and stories to illustrate the principles at hand. In the chapter What Really Counts, Hahn contrasts "behavior fit for a prostitute a century ago (that) now parades across the TV screen" with qualities she observes in her mother and other older women who exemplify "godly womanliness." A section on pursuing purity in A Woman of Worth lists guidelines to help unmarried persons avoid near occasions of sin. The chapter on the sanctity of marriage discusses the role of parents in supporting the marriages of their adult children. It contains a series of bullet points under the headings quality time, physical touch and closeness, gift giving, and words of affirmation.

Overall, this is a balanced resource, tackling issues head on while affirming and reaffirming the immense rewards for couples who, with faith, hope, love, and prayer, live their commitment to the vocation of marriage.

Illuminating look into America's gambling addiction

Sam Skolnik makes an admission right upfront in this penetrating look into America's gambling habit: he himself has been grappling with a gambling addiction for the past 10 years.It has not killed him or driven him into bankruptcy or to suicide or to drugs or crime -- but it has degraded his performance as a human being and a responsible citizen. He has left bills unpaid, borrowed irresponsibly, neglected his career and allowed important personal relationships to wither.

Skolnik's point is well-taken. What has happened to him on a personal level is happening to the whole country. Gambling is not killing America -- but it is subtly degrading its performance, making us a worse country, morally, economically and socially.

This is a well-researched and well-written book, full of sad personal histories. Skolnik makes the point that gambling is at its heart a giant system for redistributing wealth away from the poor who can least afford it and into the pocket of powerful lobbies and corporations. Just as individuals become hooked on gambling, states, cities and communities become hooked on the taxes they gather from the industry -- which do not cover the social costs that gambling creates. Cities and states may resist allowing casinos to establish themselves -- but the gambling industry can lose vote after vote -- until they finally win one. Once they win, they are in -- and they're never going away.

Gambling, in the words of one economist quoted here, is a "sterile transfer of money, creating no new value." Like prisons, it brings low-paid jobs into communities that need them -- but it sucks money from the weakest members of society.

Skolink's portrait of Las Vegas is particularly chilling. Far from the glitzy casinos full of high rollers, he shows a city that preys most of all on its own most vulnerable citizens. The suicide is roughly double the national average and the highest in the country; Nevada also leads the nation in bankruptcy filings, it leads in six different crime categories including murder and rape, it leads in home deliquencies, divorce and homelessness.

My one criticism of this book is that the author doesn't really prescribe solutions to this problem. But perhaps as one who combats his own addiction every day, he knows there are no magic bullets. Some individuals, we are told, may have a predetermined propensity to embrace addictive lifestyles. Perhaps what is true for individuals is also true for nations.

Amazing insight

I have never gambled in my life. Ever, yet this was an engaging book to read. First, the introduction is heartbreaking. Even though the author perhaps wasn't as bad off as some people with gambling addictions, it was still hard to read about his struggles. "It's not easy to write these things. There's a certain shame attached to confessing a gambling addiction in our culture, even more so than copping to being an alcoholic or a cocaine addict. Many still believe that people gamble excessively because of a lack of willpower or because they're simply immoral. these antiquated beliefs are beginning to fad, as doctors, scientists, and researchers are increasingly concluding that pathological gambling is a behavioral addiction that affects the brain in much the same way as substance dependencies."

But this isn't just a memoir about the author's struggle with addiction, though that component adds so much to this book! The statistics, insights, and way he writes about it makes this book a worthy and compelling read. I learned so much, and I learned to have compassion on the people yet recognize the harmful attributes of gambling, both in personal lives, and in communities,

If you are addicted to gambling, or know people who are, or just want to gather more facts and perspective on gambling, I highly recommend this well-researched book. One could argue that he's biased due to his struggle, but his perspective makes it even more of a reason to read this book and consider these things. Add to that, the style of writing, tone of this book is one that draws you into what (for some) could be perceived as a boring subject. This is not a boring subject; it is one that each of us should be aware of and learn more about. I'm grateful for the opportunity to have read this book and I hope it makes an impact on others who read it.

The stakes are high and getting higher

This is an extremely well-researched and reported book about the gambling life and the toll it takes on individuals and on society. The author examines not only the end result of gambling, but also its roots, the reason games of chance appeal to the human psyche.

Mr. Skolnik delves deeply into facets of gambling that I've never seen addressed before; for example, the particular allure of gambling in Asian cultures. He interviews dozens of people, gamblers themselves as well as those involved in both promoting and regulating the gambling industry. His narrative is enlivened by these insightful conversations.

I looked in vain, though, for a chapter on gambling and the elderly. Living as close to Atlantic City as I do, I find it puzzling and sad that those who can least afford to gamble -- the elderly who live mostly on Social Security and Medicaid -- flock to casinos that cold-heartedly take their food, utility and rent money, luring them there with shuttle buses and free buffet tickets. My spouse's elderly aunt kept a shelf full of "lucky" elephants that she took on her trips to the casinos. She bragged about wins that were obviously fictitious, given her living situation. It makes me angry even today.

The author also undercuts his arguments against gambling by confessing his own penchant for poker. While he recognizes in his head the dangers of high-stakes poker, and admits the money he has lost to it, the aversion hasn't taken hold in his heart. His continuing fascination for the game is obvious, and to me, equally as sad as any of the other stories he tells in this book. "For what it's worth, I was ranked by the site [a poker industry website] to be among the top 4,100 poker tournament players in the world." What is that worth, Mr. Skolnik? I'd love to read more of this author's personal story when he finally does fold.

Kill the messenger-Slatzer is a hero!

Liar huh? Says Spoto, huh? Spoto is the liar, he must have been paid off, he left out a lot of information on MM-JFK-RFK he knew, some of this was found in his original notes, but left out of the book. He is the one who spun the lies to deflect away from the Kennedys and tried to implicate the maid and Dr. as the killers. Also garbage is that Dimaggio and Monroe would remarry. How is it no one knew about this, no caterer, no arrangements, no dress revealed by her designer Jean Louis, nothing. If Slatzer was such a liar, just how did he know so much in 1974 which has over the years been revealed by others. I saw a documentery with Slatzer, Jane Russell, and MM's first husband James Dougherty, all together sharing stories of her. Who is the liar here, Jane, James, or just Robert? Try and rewrite history all you want, now that the principles are dead, I am sure there will be attempts. Like it or not, Jeanne Carmen lived next to MM and knew her, as did Robert Slatzer. If you really want to know the real Marilyn and what happened, this was a ground breaking book, absolutely riviting. The first time I read it I was in shock, back then we didn't know what we know now. But, like I said over these past 30-40 years the truth has come out, so now who is the liar?

Best Marilyn book I have ever read

This was written by Marilyn Monroe's best friend and confidante. The book clearly shows that Marilyn was murdered, with believable evidence, autopsy reports and documented conversations from wiretaps. I don't know why people doubt Bob Slatzer's claim that he was close to Marilyn. Just because Marilyn wasn't public about their relationship, for whatever reason, doesn't mean that it didn't exist. Recently I stumbled upon a tabloid magazine from the 50's with an article about Marilyn and Bob Slatzer's affair. Maybe it was a secret because it was an affair. Bob Slatzer was portrayed in this article as Marilyn's secret lover, and apparently it was going on at a time when she was with Bob DiMaggio, so it makes sense that it was kept undercover, (no pun intended). It was undoubtedly true if back then, the paparazzi discovered the affair and published it in a 1950's tabloid magazine with photographs of them together. Marilyn was probably the one that wouldn't or couldn't go public with this relationship and Bob probably wanted the world to know,....and he did after Marilyn had nothing to lose. Their affair might have been short lived, but their friendship lived on. Bob writes this book knowing things only a best friend could know and shares these parts of Marilyn's personality with whomever reads the book. The book unravels the mystery of her death in a way that is so clear, that after having read the book, I have no doubts about what happened in the end. THE DEFINITIVE BOOK ABOUT THE LIFE & DEATH OF MONROE

I wish this book would be reprinted. At the time it was first published it caused a lot of controversy. It has stood the test of time. Many people were "leery" of the assertions that Marilyn Monroe had been murdered,but since this author's long and trying efforts to show the real facts of what happened to Marilyn, many of the real facts he presented to the public in 1974 have been made public. Many people did not want or know whether to believe Slatzer's accounts of Monroe's keeping a diary, and recording her accounts of "what Bobby Kennedy told her". Recently released and published FBI & CIA documents "PROVE" that Slatzer was INDEED RIGHT ABOUT MARILYN & THE KENNEDY BROTHERS. A recently de-classified CIA DOCUMENT BOLDLY STATES THAT IN 1962, "THE CIA WAS AWARE THAT MARILYN MONROE KEPT A SO-CALLED DIARY THAT RECORDED CONVERSATIONS SHE HAD WITH THE THEN ATTORNEY GENERAL, ROBERT F. KENNEDY. THE CONTENTS OF HER DIARY DISCUSSED AMOUNG OTHER THINGS; THE PLOT TO KILL CASTRO; THE FACT THE CIA/GOVERNMENT HAD MAFIA HOODLUMS ON THE PAYROLL;etc. At least this author personally knew his subject and has made countless efforts to clear the smeared reputation the executives at 20th Century Fox Film Corp., gave her, as well as the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office, and The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office placed on her. The Studio at the time of her death, did not make an effort to state they had in fact re-hired MM for "Something's Got To Give", along with the fact they had given her a raise in salary. The Coroner,The D.A.'s Office,and certain higher ups in the LAPD have kept closed mouthed about the truth of her murder and continue this ridiculous behavior today. Even former Deputy District Attorney, John Miner, who witnessed her autopsy,now admits, as Slatzer had written in 1974, that Monroe did not in fact, commit suicide, and DID in fact, have relations with the Both John & Bobby Kennedy and made recordings at the suggestions of her psychiatrist, Ralph Greenson, of said relations. This author is probably the most well informed and possibly the last remaining close confident that Marilyn Monroe had. If there are any more Biographies written on Marilyn Monroe, I hope that Mr. Robert Slatzer is the author.That way, we can set the record straight once again, and hopefully forget about the mis-information that people have been writing for the last 16 or more years.

Rachel Rawlings was born and raised in the Baltimore Metropolitan area. Her family, originally from Rhode Island, spent summers in New England sparking her fascination with Salem, MA. She has been writing fictional stories and poems since middle school, but it wasn't until 2009 that she found the inspiration to create her heroine Maurin Kincaide and complete her first full length novel, The Morrigna. I received Ill Fate in return for an honest review as part of the tour hosted by Bewitching Book Tours. It’s been a few months since the end of the last book she’s now dating Mason who happens to be the right guy this time no more jumping into relationships. Someone has taken a hit out on Maurin the best choice is to lock her up for her own protection and let them handle it. After the failed attempt they decide to kidnapped her boyfriend, father and dog. The only option is to team up with her ex-boyfriend whose still has feelings for her to get them back.
Following the trail they find Conry at the hands of the blood witches who are draining him of his blood and replacing it with something sinister but they don’t find her father or Mason. While healing Conry she has a meeting with the Seelie Queen who is willing to help her find her men but she has to swear allegiance to the light court. Deciding that fighting the Dark court guards is just not working Maurin and Conry agree to meet with the king who attempts to force her to swear allegiance to his court by using her werewolf friends as bargaining chips. Will Maurin find her missing men before it’s too late? Will she be able to stop the enemy from that past who’s determined to get revenge?
I like Maurin she really works for me as a character even though she’s going through men. I hate to admit it drives me nuts but hopefully Mason will be the one because they just work together. I also have to admit that even though he doesn’t talk I have a soft spot for Conry her fae guardian dog that she received from her father the lord of the Wild Hunt. I also really like who Amelia has turned into she’s like Maurin growing into who she’s destined to be. I like Cash a lot but I’ve been secretly rooting through them all for her to pick him but I think it may just work out for the best. I want to dislike Aiden after everything but he’s grown on me.
I’ve been reading the entire series one after another after receiving them for an upcoming book tour so it’s been interesting watching Maurin grow so much in the last year. I knew it was coming each book has been primary based on one type of supernatural being so this one had to be Fae after all they just recently joined the council. I really like the supernatural world that she lives in with vampires being accepted just like werewolves. I’ve really grown to love Maurin she reminds me a lot of a fae Mercy Thompson she runs with the big scary guys and even is dating one. The author has created a unique story that captures the heart as well as the imagination. Each book is packed full of action, mystery, coffee and just a touch of romance all perfectly blended together. The author has a beautifully way of telling Maurin’s story it’s well executed and flows from start to finish creating a book that is hard to put down. While this is my first series by the author I’ve become hooked and can’t wait to see what comes next.

Maurin Kincaide certainly has led an interesting life–from unloved troubled child to Regulator for the Council (the collective heads of the supernatural community in Salem) and daughter of the Lord of the Wild Hunt–she has been dealt a complicated hand. Now, when things seem to be calming down, Maurin finds herself the object of an assassination order. To complicate matters, it seems the Dark Court is also hunting Maurin, and her father, magic dog, and boyfriend have all disappeared.

Maurin must evade the people hunting her and try to find her missing loved ones while navigating the twisty-turny politics of the Fae Courts. She will need to harness her evolving powers and lean on the growing cast of supporters and friends she has in order to save the day.

Thus far, I have really enjoyed The Maurin Kincaide series. The characters are interesting, the setting is well-developed, the supernatural mix is fun, and the stories themselves are well-developed and intriguing. Ill Fated hits all of these notes, but for me there was something a bit exhausting about this installment. I think my main frustration is with Maurin herself. While I appreciate a kick-butt heroine, I do not particularly enjoy a superwoman. I want someone that learns from her mistakes and grows–not just in her powers but her maturity. Maurin is getting better with magic but I do not see the same growth in her decision-making.

The actual writing remains fantastic–conversations flow and there are twists and turns a plenty. The breakneck pace may have lead to some of my reading exhaustion but overall the story moves with finesse. One of my favorite parts of this series is definitely the world-building, and this installment only solidified that opinion. The bigger look we get at the Fae world is really exciting and I for one want more of that.

Overall, Ill Fated is a strong entry into a fun series. While not my personal favorite, everything I have come to expect and enjoy in this series is present, and fans of Maurin Kincaide will not be disappointed.

I was so excited when I got this book. My favorite characters were back and getting into more trouble then its worth. Cash is back and babysitting Maurin as someone wants to kill her. Her hot hunky and most drool worthy boyfriend, Mason is still the head of the STPD. Aiden is still pining for Maurin but has Ryanne. So what does a girl do. Now there is a new threat on Maurin's head and everyone is trying to keep her safe and as we know Maurin will not take things lying down. The fae courts a fighting and its spilling all over Salem . And the dark guard is after Maurin and they want her head. On top of that her dog, her father and her man are missing . Can she find them without loosing her head and will she get the swing of court politics before they are doomed. Just all in a day's work for our Maurin

Like I said I was so happy when I found this was out. I picked up and started reading right away. Was so happy to get my fix of one my favorite series characters . I love me some Mason and Cash.

But digress. Rachel makes you feel like these characters are like part of your family. They just get under your skin and you want to help them out anyway you can. I feel like Cash is the big brother trying to keep you in you place and keep you safe. Aiden is the cool neighbor that comes in and just makes life difficult. Getting into trouble with you while trying to hit on you at the same time . Amelia is you best friend that you want to have fun with but still need to trust her . I mean I can see all of these characters as part of my life. She also brings back a very bad character and adds a couple of others . We even see a couple of zombies trying to take out a chunk of our Maurin. You will laugh and you will shed a tear or two . But most of all you will be cheering for all of them. Not going to say anymore cause I will blow the ending for you. And trust me the last pages are happy dance moments .

Rachel just gets better with each book in the series. This book will take you on a ride with some twists and turns . The story will keep you reading all night long . I did get a book hang over from reading this book. I did read it in a day, it was that good. Trust me from the very first page to the very last page, you will be drawn in. Ill Fated is packed full of hot werewolves, vampires, fae. Love, friendship and oh yes a kidnapping and a price on her head. Now if that doesn't make you want to read then I don't know what will. Oh yeah the zombies . So if you want a great series please

check out the MAURIN KINCAIDE SERIES and a if you have read the first five check out ILL FATED trust me you will not be disappointed at all .
