SIMULINK, a MATLAB based simulation and modeling tool, is discussed in chapters where the development of models use either the transfer function approach or the state-space method.

Dr. S. Graham Kelly has been a faculty member and administrator at The University of Akron since 1982. He is the author of one textbook in Vibrations, now in its second edition, another text on System Dynamics and Response, and the author of the Schaum's Outline in Mechanical Vibrations. Dr. Kelly has served The University of Akron in its administration as Associate Provost and most recently as Interim Dean of Engineering.

I just reread Dr. Keys' three earlier books, "Subliminal Seduction", "Media Sexploitation" and "The Clam Plate Orgy", which I'd picked up back in the '70s and '80s when they came out. I had not known he wrote a fourth book until I checked his Wikipedia entry and was glas to see that "The Age Of Manipulation" was available from Amazon and at a nice, non-collectors item type price.
This volume seems a bit "drier" and less humorous than the previous works, but I can't offer a detailed review since I'm still reading it. but it's very informative and very intelligent. A nice change from the spy noovels and men's magazines I usually read.

He sure stirs up the pot...

Dr. Key's fourth book on subliminal advertising is worth the purchase price just for the pictures: liquor ads with blatantly obvious erect penises drawn into the stream of pouring gin, "sex" airbrushed into practically everywhere, and even a McDonalds ad with a hand dipping an unforgivably phallic "Chicken Tender" into sauce. Key hypothesizes that the male homosexual taboo is at play in many of these ads. When we perceive these images subliminally but repress them, he says, it creates an irrational attraction to the advertisement. He showed some of these ads to Inuits, almost all of whom saw the penises immediately and burst out laughing. Americans only saw the images immediately 5% of the time. Although Key doesn't use the word "meme," he is thinking along the memetic paradigm as he uses Madison Avenue's sneaky tactics to enlighten readers about the vulnerable nature of their minds. A well written and erudite book.

off the subject

I haven't yet finished this book. It started out o.k., much like his earlier books, but after a few chapters he strayed wildly off of the subject (subliminal manipulation) and I've been waiting for him to get back to it. At this point he has talked about politics, the nature of truth, philosophy, language, Aristotelian logic.......all without any support for his opinions. Read his earlier books instead.

A Very Modern Look At Myths

This book is part of the series The New Critical Idiom edited by John Drakakis. It is written by Laurence Coupe who is a Senior Lecturer in English at Manchester Metropolitan University. Myth was written with the students of literature in mind. It gives them a comprehensive overview of the development of myth, showing how mythic themes, structures and symbols persist in literature and entertainment today. This book shows the relation between myth, culture and literature, it explores uses made of the term "myth" within the fields of literary criticism, anthropology, cultural studies, feminism, Marxism, and psychoanalysis, it discusses the association between modernism, post-modernism, myth and history, it familiarizes the student with themes such as the dying god, the quest of the Grail, the relation between chaos and cosmos, and the vision of the end of time. And finally demonstrates the growing importance of the green dimension of myth.

The introduction of the book is trying to establish a definition of myth that will take us forward into the book. The author starts by giving simple examples of how the myth is seen from different angles by different people. In literary and cultural studies myth is usually used as a synonym of ideology for example when we say "the myth of progress" or "the myth of the free individual". In the entertainment world it is used as a synonym for fantasy. In either case the meaning is illusion. Then the author gives us four stories that define different types of myths, fertility myths, creation myths, deliverance myths, and hero myths. These are not the only types but they are the most seen in mythology. The author believes that mythology is an important element of literature and that literature is a means to extend mythology. The author decided to use the approach outlined by the theologian Don Cupitt to define myth. Don Cupitt considers that there are so many conflicting definitions of myth because each theorists takes one sort of myth and makes it the center of his studies that it is better to list a number of "typical features" and then act on the assumption that a narrative is mythic if it has most but not necessarily all of these features.

Part one is about reading myths.The author uses as his vehicle the film by Coppola Apocalypse Now. Through it we discuss the work of Frazer, T.S. Eliot and his "mythical Method", Edgell Rickword's mythopoeic program and Mircea Eliade's work. Chapter one focuses on the fertility myth and Frazer's work on it. Chapter two focuses on the creation myth and Mircea Eliade's work on the subject and in chapter three the myth of deliverance is discussed and through out all three chapters the hero myth is discussed in relation to the material. All this is done with an eye on the literary and cultural texts and contexts.

Mythic reading is the subject of part two. Chapter four talks about two kinds of mythic reading: allegory, which is identified as realist; and typology, which is identified as non-realist. Chapter five and the subsequent chapters talk about the theories of the past and present. The people whose works are discussed are Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and Claude L�vi-Strauss in Chapter five; Ronald Barthes, Northrop Frye, Fredric Jameson and Marina Warner in Chapter six; Gary Snyder, James Lovelock, Theodore Roszak and Michel Serres in Chapter seven.

I really loved this book and enjoyed the examination of three types of myths in relation to the movie Apocalypse Now. I also very much enjoyed the easy explanation of the theories of myth in part two of the book. I think what makes it really good is the fact that it uses examples from works we have all read or seen at some point or another in our lives. It keeps the book fresh and makes the thought process very easy on the student (or in my case reader). It also brings about the conclusion that with the loss of myth we lose our environment, and that if the natural world is not alive (as is portrayed in myths) then it is a "wasteland". Another idea that came across loud and clear was how to read myths and how to be a mythic reader. It is all in how your "see" the myth and from what point of view. A wonderful book indeed!

An informative and definitive look at the study of Myth.

Divided into two sections; 'Reading Myth' and 'Mythic Reading' Coupeland is thorough in his explanations and examination of the connections between myth, language, narrative, history and imagination.

The 'New Critical Idiom' is turning out to be a great series. I also own 'Magical Realism' and it is also well-researched and well-explained.

Good for beginners (like me) interested in this subject.

Asher's enjoyable if violent SF novel pits heavily augmented posthumans and the AIs who rule them, the Polity Collective, against the Prador, vicious, bug-eyed aliens out to conquer all human space. The Polity Collective, an eminently civilized society, despite a small separatist underground that resents the AI's benign rule, stands in contrast to the crablike Prador, who rule by brute force. Since the Prador have a technological advantage in space warfare, two human beings—the super-soldier Jebel Krong and Moria Salem, a technician with an illicit brain augmentation—must combine their talents to try to destroy the impregnable Prador warship threatening humanity. The Polity novels (Gridlink, etc.) lack the intellectual complexity of the best British space opera by such writers as Iain M. Banks, Ken MacLeod and Justina Robson, but if you don't mind the gross out (the Prador eat not only their young but also their human enemies), they're invariably a good read. (July)

The Polity, a space-faring civilization ruled mostly by AIs because only they can cope with the math for the runcible operation enabling interstellar travel, has just made first contact. No one knew quite what to expect of the crablike Prador's visit to Avalon Station, though the massacre that ensued wasn't on anybody's list. Seems the bloodthirsty Prador are bent on taking over the Polity and its runcible technology, and the Polity powers that be must scrambled to get to have any chance of defeating them. Jebel Krong, a soldier on Avalon when the aliens arrived, and runcible tech Moria Salem, recently cerebrally augmented to handle the technology, are thrown together in a classic space-opera scenario in which two wild cards are the private surgeon who installed Moria's aug--a fugitive--and the aug itself, which is more than ordinary. The Prador invasion and Polity politics are revealed as horribly intertwined, but Moria and Jebel might end the war with a particularly bold plan. A fast and furious spectacle developed with gusto. Neal Asher is a science fiction writer whose work has been nominated for both the Philip K. Dick and the British Fantasy Society awards. He has published more than fifteen books, many set within his “Polity” universe, including Gridlinked, The Skinner, and Dark Intelligence. He divides his time between Essex and a home in Crete.

Currently the First in the Polity Universe Series

Even though Neal Asher wrote "Prador Moon" (2006) after he'd written several other book in his "Polity Universe" series (started in 2001), it's currently the first novel in the overall series by internal chronological order. It, essentially, gives the story of first contact between the Polity and the Prador. It's a well-written, action-packed, science fiction book with an excellent universe and decent characterizations. My only real issue with it is that the point-of-view changes a lot. Instead of changing POV at chapter breaks, Asher does so repeatedly at section breaks within chapters. That leads to a bit of confusion if you miss the section break and gives the story a bit of a choppy feel. Also, be aware that even though this book has an emotionally satisfying ending, it doesn't tie everything up. It can't. There are another 13 books in the series that continue the Polity/Prador relationship. It's not a bad thing. It's just something to keep in mind.

I'm rating the book at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5.

I'm a longtime fan of Ashers work and this book didn't disappoint. His Polity novels contain intricate, richly imagined world's with lots of intrigue, action, and suspense. This NOT pulp science fiction and well worth reading.

intriguing

"The voidoid" is an intriguing piece of work that, at first merely leaves a fuzzy mark on your memory. The first time reading it you're not quite sure what you have just read. It is one of those books that is deserving of being looked over more than once to hear the authors intent and to form a purpose for every spontaneous quotation or meaning for every irregular symbol. R. Hell uses the words "weird jewel" and "filthy aerial photo" to describe his book. These words, like the book "The Voidoid," are unspecific and only leave the reader with more questions and a want to see things as the author has seen them. For me, it's this curiousity that gives the book its strength. It is one of those book that i need to reread several times because i feel as if reading it once has only left me with a glimpse of its entirety...

The book did arrive on time and in good condition. HOWEVER, it is not the book pictured! I am lucky my professor is allowing the book that was shipped to me to be used. It is a blue one and a totally different edition that the one in the picture, the one I thought I was buying. I would not buy from this seller again.

About the Author

Mary B. Gregoire, Ph.D., R.D., is Executive Director for the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, former Director of Food and Nutrition Services at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, and Professor and Chair of the Department of Clinical Nutrition at Rush University. She has more than 30 years of experience as an administrator in both education and foodservice operations. Her career includes positions as professor and chair of apparel, educational studies, and hospitality management at Iowa State University, associate foodservice director and internship director at Rush University Medical Center, associate director of research at the National Food Service Management Institute, graduate program director at Kansas State University, and foodservice director at Jasper County Hospital. She has been an active researcher in the area of foodservice and hospitality management and has published numerous articles related to various aspects of foodservice management. Dr. Gregoire has her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from North Dakota State University and her Ph.D. from Kansas State University.

Pretty good!

I bought this book just after reading "Getting started with Arduino" - hoping that this book would enhance my knowledge enough that I would not break everything I plug into the Arduino with its Atmel Microcontroller.

Sofar it has been great. I have a degree in Computer Science, so some of the "This is a microprocessor, this is what makes it up" stuff was redundant for me, but this will not be the case for everyone.

The "Electronics 101" section is really helping me a lot - I don't have to pester my EE friend with nearly as many questions!

Practical guidance in easy to read format

With the enormous variety of components, processors, interfaces and architectures available for embedded designs, the learning curve seems intimidating. This book does a great job at introducing the reader to the basics and then walk through some real-world applications. The focus is on simple designs, yet they illustrate the complex applications that can quickly be achieved. Common interfaces (USB, ethernet, RS232, etc.) are all covered and will give the reader the confidence to go and explore the next level of HW design.
Highly recommended !! I hope John is working on "Designing Embedded Software" to complement this great resource.

Very well done ! Way more interesting than I imagined...

I've only read half of it so far, but it's been exceptionally good to this point. I can't say enough about how informative the first chapter "Introduction to computer architecture" was. The author seems excessively leary of noise in the circuit design chapter and a bit picky about how you draw your schematics, but I suppose these things come from experience.(or maybe just being paranoid and anal-retentive!) I may have jumped the gun reviewing it so quickly, but I highly doubt it's going to go bad all the sudden. Great book! :)

This small book will open your heart and help you relax into the loving and supportive arms of the universe. And from there-who knows what you may do and become. Life is for living, and David encourages us to find what is true in us and follow that.

GREAT book

Amazing book and very engaging. I was always looking for a way to simply live in the "now", because I was always either thinking about my past or imaging what my future holds. The now seemed not worthy to think about, how wrong I was!
Read this book if you want to enjoy life to its fullest.

Beautiful truth on the nature of the human 'being'

Thank you for this book which delves a little deeper into the truth of who you are and what you are. It seems to point to an infinte potential already within, that the reader may not have been aware of prior to reading. It combines humor and some heart felt moments at times which seem to add to the books authenticity. Practical experiences outlined in the chapters, allow the reader to rest as the title suggests.....as the peace that they already are in 'The Ocean of Now'...........
