From the Author
Over the years, I have casually collected material from a myriad of sources that elucidated what can be known of what is called the "historical Jesus". My interest in the facts of Jesus' life (and the authenticity of his pronouncements) long predated my introduction to the non-Christian scriptures of the East, such as Buddhism, Taoism, and Advaita. After all, I was raised (and baptized at 13) as a Baptist.�

When I first came across a translation of The Gospel of Thomas, I wanted to determine how that testament of Jesus' "unknown" sayings contributed to the overall picture of who Jesus was, and what he had taught.�

A friend, a (now deceased) professor who retired to Australia, asked me to write for him--from that unorganized file I had collected--what to me appeared to be the answer to the question of how The Gospel of Thomas informed our understanding of the historical Jesus and his message.

Originally I wrote only the section "Commentary on Verses" that is listed here in the Table of Contents, which gives my annotation on each aphorism in Thomas.�

The next question followed though: If these are authentic sayings of Jesus, why were they not in public circulation until 1945?�

And another significant question needed to be answered: Why would anyone conclude that they are authentic scriptures?�

These questions led to writing"The Fifth Gospel" material.

The value of my compilation, I feel, is that it may be of service in drawing attention to the importance of not relegating the "gnostic" Jesus to a dismissive category. There's something of invaluable significance that's been overlooked, so far, in the academic and scholarly biblical discussion. That's why this manuscript was composed.

Jesus, Thomas, Clarity

Robert Wolfe's superb book is an important contribution to the understanding of who Jesus was and what he said. Many of us who have read translations of the "Thomas Gospel" over the years have pondered how different Jesus' teachings are in the "Thomas Gospel" to what is largely attributed to him in the New Testament. This new book gives one a magnificent opportunity to delve into the "Thomas Gospel" and meet a Jesus unencombered with hierarchy, virgin births, sin & salvation and much more. I think many people will greet this book with gratitude and joy while others may feel it challenges too deeply long held beliefs within traditional Christian understanding. I urge anyone interested in these matter to buy Mr. Wolfe's book for it is beautifully written, organized, persuasive and, as stated above, deeply challenging.

Exactly what I was looking for...

After eading The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment what struck me the most in Eckhart Tolle's book was how the words of Jesus were brought to life and held a whole new meaning that they had never had for me before I was so moved that I thought that I would like someday to compile all of Jesus' words and illuminate them as Tolle had. But I no longer have to do that, because Mr. Wolfe has all ready done that for us in this enlightening book. He, in like fashion to Tolle, takes the words of The Gospel of Thomas and points to how they are, in turn, filled with pointers to the Truth of Non-Duality. And although he deals with only the 114 saying of this gospel, it is done so well that, when reading any of the Canonical Gospels one can see the pointers extant in them, not withstanding the alterations made by the early Pauline/Constantinian church, as explained in the first part of the book. For those, "with eyes to see" this book can be a great revelation and a "key" to Jesus' teachings.

Stunning

This book is a stunning expos� of the new testament. Not just about the non-cannonical Gospel of Thomas, but exposes truths about the whole new testament that I never knew. Learning when and more importantly why the books of the new testament were written and why the standard incarnation of the bible came to be was enlightening (pun intended). After reading this, my whole perspective on Christianity has changed, prompting me to disregard the religion entirely and focus on the teachings of the MAN called Jesus, who was undoubtedly enlightened.

Clear and concise summary.

Very clear and concise summary of the big Robbins. I often read it first before reading big Robbins so that I have a better idea of what I'm diving into. 4 stars because it is a pocket edition meaning the pages are very narrow and the spine is tight. That makes reading it a little frustrating because it's always trying to close itself unless you break the spine. I'm going to have it spiral bound but the margins are narrow so it's a risk. I wish the publisher would release a spiral option -that would earn 5 stars.

An honest, and at times amusing, look at the Afghanistan the media rarely show you

Let me start off by saying I don't like these types of books. I find these 'behind the scenes, true life adventure' tales tend to be dryer than the Gobi desert at high noon. Invariably they are heavy on detail and light on any form of prosaic proficiency or artistic merit.
So this was as refreshing as that first cold beer on a hot summer's day. Dave pulls no punches in his views and opinions of the inefficiencies and ineptitude of both the Coalition forces and the civilian contractors who often see such war zones as nothing more than lucrative cash cows, or indeed the Afghan security forces and politicians who seem to view corruption and pilfering as a perk of the job.
His honesty in admitting his early blinkered Stars and Stripes idealism only endears the author to you more as continued infighting and negativity within the external authorities charged with 'bettering' the country as well as the often contradictory rules of the culture he's living within gradually make him realise that the mission to bring Afghanistan to peace and on a par with other developing countries is somewhat akin to a blind man attempting to ice skate up Everest while wrestling a rabid mongoose.
The juxtaposition that he portrays throughout; of a country steeped in history and with sometimes cruel yet still beautiful landscapes, the ordinary people (both Afghan and within the armed forces and civilian organisations) who are truly trying to make a difference, against a background of struggle, resistance, descent into self destructive fundamentalism and a country plunged decades backwards from the cosmopolitan place it was 40 years ago gives the reader a totally different picture from anything that we have ever seen in the media.
It's strange to call arrogance or cockiness endearing qualities, but, with Kaelin, that's exactly what they are, and it is these attributes that carried him (pretty successfully) through ten years in one of the world's most dangerous areas.
From visits to a stadium still haunted by the echoing cries of the Taliban's victims to illicit visits to back street bordellos to walking paths trod by Alexander the Great, Dave takes you on a journey not only of the senses but one of learning. The mistakes and FUBARS made on this mission of rebuilding are all too obvious as Dave paints a picture of incompetency, greed, lack of empathy and a basic lack of caring that has made the whole exercise seem almost pointless. But as Dave points out; if he, or any of the foreign workers based there, manage to make even a small bit of difference then maybe, just maybe, that effect will ripple outwards and once the main coalition forces withdraw, there will be more people to stand against any resurgence of the Taliban. And despite the despondency reported in the media, and also despite the relentless rolling forward of an uncaring military-industrial complex, the book does have that message of hope at its heart. That maybe one day, Afghanistan will once more be a cosmopolitan country, free of the shackles of an insidious group who have twisted a religion for their own (and their Wahhabi masters) ends. I also have a feeling that should this book fall into the hands of the 'people at the top' there will be a lot of uncomfortable fidgeting in seats of power. A great read and an insightful and honest examination of one of the great dilemmas of the 21st Century.

GREAT READ!! Dave gives an outsider a snapshot of what truly happened in Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban. Though the Coalition Forces (NATO) has occupied this country for over twelve years, there's still much work to be done. Corruption, waste, fraud, and abuse of funds. Also, the political and cultural limitations of Afghanistan would make someone believe the Coalition Forces have not made much progress in the amount of time and spent. "Can you handle the truth?" Excellent work and an eye opening experience.

A MUST READ

Dave Kaelin has the rare talent of telling great stories while expressing the truth about the saga of contractors in Afghanistan campaign. As a former professor at Georgetown University, I am very impressed. Furthermore, if I were king of the day, I would make his book mandatory reading in National Security circles in Washington, D.C. and classes at leading graduate schools on National Security and Business. Finally, I would have politicans read it so they could learn how to provide oversight to the large contracting world. Most importantly, his book tells the untold and hidden story about the contracting world, their inability or refusal to manage talent, their horrible human capital managment systems. It is amazing that there are any positive contributions at all by the contracting world for all the money they are paid by the tax payer. But that is the good side of Dave's story. For every poor or sorry or lazy contractor, there are many good people. There are contractors who sincerly care and are competent, and without them the mission accomplishment would fall even shorter than it has now or would end in dismal failure. Unfortunately, because of the bad ones, and the poor management decisions by the upper echelons of contracting companies on leader selection (it is based on the good old boy system where all that counts is one's retired rank from a military that does not have the best promotion and personnel system), as well as poor oversight by the US government, contractors have a bad reputation. Dave brings many of these to light, but with every horror story, he also provides ones that tell of contractors trying to do the right thing despite non recognition by their companies and by the government. "They are getting a pay check, and that is all the reward they get!" by one Army officer, who went on to say "and most of them dont deserve it." With Dave's book you can understand why Army officers and civilians can feel this way, but also Dave points out that they cannot get along without the good ones. Dave's book is a sincere and honest wake up call for the US Military and nation on what needs to be done in the future with the contracting world if we continue to use so many in future adventures. There is a place for them giving the strategic challenges of the future, but according to Dave Kaelin in No Regrets, it cannot continue with the current approach. Otherwise, it will continue to be a big waste of money and a waste talent of the competent 50%.

√ Well-Written & Great Selection of Ideas for Tuning

When reading ORACLE RAC PERFORMANCE TUNING, don't be too quick to quibble because the author is suggesting a method that you don't use. Try to be open to other ideas. Here's what I mean: DBAs are a smart, but tough lot of characters. If you get 10 DBAs reading a book on performance tuning, each of the 10 will be jumping up and down shouting, "That's not how I would do it," or "That's not what Tom Kyte says," etc. Instead, look for ideas that are something new--some new technique that you haven't seen before. By having this attitude, I was able to glean some really great ideas--things that honestly I had not thought of. For example, page 93 has a script to find what object is being sent back and forth the most between nodes. Honestly, I never thought of looking at the object names. That's just one example. The chapters on benchmarking tools is pretty much new territory for me.

♦ There is a really great thing in this book, that I haven't seen in other technical books. Chapter 14 is entitled, "Book Summary," where Brian gives the essential points in the book. This is a GREAT idea. In fact, I think readers should actually read this part first. I bet the author used Chapter 14 as the outline for writing the book. (Am I right, Brian?) The only nit I have here, is that I wish the author would have included the chapter reference for each major point.

♦ The author, Brian Peasland, makes an excellent point in the "Book Summary" section: "Tune the system as if it were a single-instance database. All of the single-instance tuning techniques still apply to Oracle RAC. An application that will not scale with a single-instance Oracle database will not scale with Oracle RAC." (I would add that if it doesn't scale on a single instance, it will likely be much worse with RAC.) This is a great insight--I came to the same conclusion as Brian. Of course, our scripts will be a little different, but the tuning concepts are the same.

♦ On the overall quality of the book: To design and produce a quality book on an extensive topic is not a simple task--especially a book of this magnitude. Let's face it, most techies are TERRIBLE at writing and presenting. It's such a pleasure to read a book that is clearly written and thoughtful. The author has clearly spent an ENORMOUS amount of time researching scripts, wait events, concepts, etc. I was very impressed with the quality of the work. Scripts nicely formatted, concepts clearly explained, etc. Again, a really nice job for both writer and editor.

♦ In addition, someone (the editor, Don Burleson, I think) has spent a lot of time getting the design of this book right. The physical formatting of the book is excellent--good font size, good margins, clear and easy to read. If you remember some of the very early Rampant Press books, you are in for a pleasant surprise. As another example of the quality of this book, I note the cover design. Again, someone (Janet Burleson, cover designer) has spent a TON of time producing a quality book. The end product clearly reflects a lot of hard work--books like this do not just happen by accident.

♦ There are a huge number of technical ideas--I recommend skipping around to the topics that interest you. I liked especially the chapters talking about the interconnect, and various scripts to spot interconnect problems. In addition, I quickly found one topic that really startled me, because I haven't seen it documented this thoroughly before. I mean, "Bloom Filters" on page 202. Brian illustrates this concept nicely. This is important to me because we had encountered bugs related to this feature, but none of us DBAs knew what in the world the "Bloom Filter" meant.

√ All in all, ORACLE RAC PERFORMANCE TUNING is an outstanding accomplishment. Tons of great ideas in every chapter, clearly explained, with lots of nice charts and diagrams. I am sure I will be using this book as a reference for a long time. I am recommending to my boss that she get copies for our group. Highly Recommend!

I wish he had written this ten years ago

This book gives you what it says on the cover: Oracle RAC Performance Tuning. You will not, for example, find much detail of using Flex Clusters (though he does de-bunk one of the common myths) nor any real mention of policy management, ACFS, or QoS. Perhaps Brian will cover them in his next book. No problem - what you will find is four hundred pages about performance tuning, and they are all worth reading. The author follows similar techniques to those I use, and formalizes them wonderfully. The general methodology is that you cannot tune anything unless you understand it. So most of the book is about how to work out what the hardware, the operating system, and Oracle, are doing; how they are doing it; and why. Understand all that, and the tuning is obvious.
The content will be useful for all DBAs, though the level of assumed knowledge is such that this is not for absolute beginners. You do need to be familiar with SQL, PL/SQL, and DB admin; you need to know how to read an execution plan. To put it in Oracle Uni terms, ideally you need to be at OCP level and studying for the OCM and the RAC Specialization. The material goes far beyond what Oracle Uni teaches for those qualifications. Those not yet so familiar with RAC will appreciate the way in which each chapter begins with an exposition of the architectural concept, and those of us who think we know it all will learn from the detail. For example, chapter two starts with a nice description of how the global cache service and global enqueue service work, and then WHAM! A bunch of scripts that show how to track exactly which blocks are being transferred across the interconnect when you select a particular row. The result is a nice combination of architectural detail with plenty of what one might call "tips and tricks". There are chapters on tuning specific elements of a GI environment that are very practical: the interconnect; storage; memory; parallel processing. The chapter "RAC Support Tools" is, for me, the highlight in this category. Other chapters are more theoretical: cache fusion; wait events; AWR, ADDM, ASH.
I wish he had written this ten years ago, it would have saved me (and my clients) incalculable hours. I don't agree with everything he says - but that doesn't mean that he is wrong, it just means that I have to do some more research. Whatever your skill level, you will learn from this book. I've seen RAC since release 9.x, and parallel server before that. Even so, Brian has taught me a lot.

Tuning RAC is like tuning regular Oracle (with just a few extra considerations)

Disclaimer: I was a bit surprised when the author whom I have encountered on the Oracle support and OTN forums asked me to review his book since we have never meet in person and have not always agree in our postings. Nevertheless, I am very glad I said yes because this is a good book. I say this based on my experience having worked with every major release of Oracle since version 6 up to 11.2. This is a good book because I believe the reader will find this book useful. Brian does not waste time covering how to install and create RAC databases, but instead sticks to the intent of the title: tuning. From his early statement that for the most part tuning RAC is the same as tuning non-RAC he covers the range of tuning topics with emphasis on how the feature is affected by or works when RAC is in use. For example he demonstrates why nocache sequences are not a good idea in normal Oracle and why this option can be a disaster when used with RAC. Naturally he covers all the RAC specific topics like the GRD, GCS, and the interconnect. Brian also includes coverage with examples of the output from a slew of free optional Oracle provided tools that can monitor the OS and pull statistics out of Oracle such as oswatcher, oratop, and RAC Diag. He includes references to the Oracle support notes on each tool which in turn provide the download url’s. The book has numerous useful scripts for looking at RAC related activity. I believe this book is worth consideration.
