Excellent for beginners

I've recently begun fulfilling a forty-plus-year dream of learning to play the fiddle, and bought a couple of DVDs to support this wish.

The first DVD lesson was nice, but the presenter/instructor seemed disorganized, flowing sort of "stream of consciousness...sort of "oh, and another thing...". The second was more organized, but featured the DULLEST person in the world talking to the camera as if his views already understood music theory, relying heavily on tablature, which is accompanies the DVD but is deuce difficult to hold while bowing. I also got an "old-time fiddle" instructional DVD which is nice, quirky, and simplified, but not satisfying by itself, and not useful without a good instructional DVD as a basis.

...then, I bought Mr. Wicklund's DVD.

Mr. Wicklund takes the viewer through the BASICS, from holding the instrument (get ready to tone a few unused muscles), hold and use the bow, tuning (so you don't break a string), how to stop strings for scales, all the stuff covered in the other DVDs I've seen...but, in a friendly, inviting, organized and easy to understand way. Not trying to sound dramatic, his DVD makes the learning of what can be an unforgiving instrument seem actually POSSIBLE.

He then goes slowly through 22 songs, one or two strings at first and then progressively more difficult. He uses the songs to help the student work on and groove in points and skills he's covered. Then he stops, adds a skill (high and low positions of the second and third fingers, for instance, or drones), and then gives you more songs to practice.

Each song is presented with a video window showing his fingering, then it's broken up and covered slowly, and then he'll stop and give you pointers on the song.

Finally, he shows you how to play backup, as in bluegrass music, bowing chords to back up someone's solo. This part seems to require the book and a bit more detail than is given in the DVD, but the book's readily available and cheap, too, and I'd recommend getting it (I have yet to).

The lessons are graduated and the DVD is conveniently broken up into chapters, making it easier to use for the casual or busy student as well as the rosin-addict. You can spend a week on one skill, going back to your week's (or month's) chapter, and see that progress can be made.

Finally, it's 2 hrs long, TWICE AS LONG as almost everyone else's DVDs.

I can readily believe, as Mr. Wicklund says on the DVD, that his students take 4-8 months to cover the material covered in the DVD. For a brick-head and ham-hand like me, it looks like it'll take longer, and yet this DVD leads me to believe that even I can do it.

Mr. Wicklund has two books out, but only this DVD so far. I look forward to his producing another. I may be ready for it when it comes out. In the meantime, I'm hot to buy his books and get on with it.

I say with no exaggeration that Mr. Wicklund's treatment of what might be a humbling subject -- learning through some of the most spine-shattering off-notes only the dog could hear (you wish), and controlling that bloody bow -- seem a perfectly achievable goal.

This is a great companion to the book and CD. When the kids and I disagree about technique, it is great to have this DVD to turn to and solve the problem. Very well done and easy to use and understand.

Fantastic help for the bluegrass fiddler

I have learned more from this one DVD than from any other source. Brian Wicklund is a marvelous teacher with a very clear style easily understood by young and old alike. Each time I watch it, I pick up new insights to improve my personal fiddling technique. I really would recommend this DVD to other aspiring fiddlers.

Rhoda Hendricks' "Latin Made Simple": Use With Caution!

This book is indeed easy to use, but the reader needs to exercise a high degree of caution with it. There are a large number of typos throughout the text and, more importantly, the answers to the translation exercises consistently use the wrong verb tenses, thus making it very easy for the novice to 'learn' the wrong thing! Moreover, the supplementary readings use quite a number of vocabulary words that are never introduced anywhere in the book. While the reading exercises are fun practice for beginners, this book needs to go through another revision, with careful attention to grammatical consistency, before it can be recommended without qualification.

Latin Made Confusing!

With scores of editorial oversights (tense mismatching, singular nouns translated as plural, etc.) this book is not only very confusing to the first-time Latin student, but also not worth spending your money on. A thorough editorial review would probably fix most of the problems, but since the last edition was published in 1992, it doesn't look like the publishing company cares too much.
Publishing the book in this state is nothing short of a disservice to the public. I wasted my money on it. Don't you do the same.

Latin Over-simplified

This book's teaching method is great, but it is ruined by its over-simplification of the language. Its very concise pronunciation guide says that everything is pronounced as in English with a few exceptions. It gives very few consonants and a few diphthongs and explains them. It does not say anything about the varied pronunciation for long and short vowels. It also does not mention that the R is trilled as in romance languages, which would lead one to believe that it just as the English R (The English pronunciation of R is unique and found nowhere else). This book is good for its comparisons to English, for each word it usually gives you a related English word (you could find which syllables are long from an etimological dictionary). It also has little stories and excerpts from the Latin bible throughout. Sadly, this book stops giving the pronunciation of each word after the first chapter which leaves the reader feeling naked and insecure especially since the stress of the word depends on which syllables are long (when this book does not mark the vowels as long or short like most latin instruction books). In conclusion, this is great if you already have a Latin dictionary that explains pronunciation and stress, but don't buy this book as a sole source or you'll not learn Latin correctly.

Best Practices Book on Accounts Payable - Recommended

Essentials of Accounts Payable is a great resource. I'm a practicing CPA and I found it useful.

Accounts payable is normally the first place a new accountant/bookkeeper is going to get a start within an accounting department. And this is in many ways an organization's first line of defense, so it's important to have the function well-covered. Essentials of Accounts Payable is filled with best practice information and advice that will prove insightful and useful to anybody dealing with this function.

This book is not meant to be a complete preparation for the job of accounts payable. One still must learn "debits and credits" - basic accounting. Also, every organization has its own mix of circumstances and history and is therefore unique. What is a desirable practice in one organization may not be in another as the book makes clear. By gaining information, insights and advice on the subject, one is better prepared to properly revise their own accounting policies and procedures.

Since accounting policies and procedures are not static, it pays to revisit ideas about accounts payable. This is a great book for that purpose.

This book is horrible out of date in the information age, the basics are covered here, which you can find on the internet for free. I do not recommend it in 2015 and going forward. I would put in on the lower list of AP books to read.

Recommended for Anyone in Business, Management, or Other Leadership Roles

LEAD FROM THE HEART was required reading for my “Principles of Management” class in college. It’s a timely book for instructing the next generation of managers. This book explains how job satisfaction and employee engagement have been steadily declining over the last 22+ years, so that more than half of all workers in the U.S. now hate their jobs. The author, Mark Crowley, wrote: “Studies prove that our traditional leadership model has reached the end of its effectiveness. Workers across the country have grown widely disengaged and disheartened and American productivity is being greatly undermined as a result” (p. 11). In his book, Crowley proposes what to do about this dilemma. It says right on the back cover, “21st-century employees need to feel valued, respected, developed, and cared for. Their work has to matter.” Which makes sense, because people’s emotions are real, and disregarding their feelings has real consequences. So if you want to get the most out of your employees, it pays to be nice to them. Leading from the heart produces employees who are more loyal, engaged, and productive.

Crowley explains: “Leading with any amount of heart flies in the face of our collective belief that the heart acts like kryptonite in business. We associate the heart in the workplace as being soft, sentimental, and antithetical to driving profit” (p. xiv). However, this book shows how it’s the traditional way of managing employees that is actually detrimental to productivity. Consider the employee’s perspective – they might describe a typical authoritarian boss as hard-hearted, heartless, or cold-blooded. Is it a coincidence that all of these terms have to do with the heart? I don’t think so – the underlying message is that the heart is the vital part. Some world-class companies have already caught on to this concept. If you check the lists of “Best Companies to Work For,” you will find that SAS, Zappos, Google, etc. place a great deal of emphasis on employee engagement and satisfaction. First-rate CEOs seem to instinctively follow the Golden Rule, which says: “Treat others the way you would like to be treated.” It could also mean that they naturally “lead from the heart.”

More than just a leadership how-to guide, LEAD FROM THE HEART relates the author’s personal journey, telling how his childhood experiences shaped his managerial abilities, eventually arriving at an epiphany that “I had brought heart into leadership” (p. xix). Crowley backs up the points he makes with references to published research and anecdotal evidence to support his views. The book's conclusion is particularly compelling as a convincing example of the good that comes with leading from the heart. It reinforces the idea that “long after you can remember the actual work or the targets you met along the way, what’s sustained in your memory is the effect you had on people’s lives. By this one measure, above all others, you’ll know the true impact you had as a leader” (p. 137). This book is an easy and enjoyable read. It’s suitable for managers, leaders, coaches, teachers, and mentors of any kind, not just in business, as all authority figures would do well to lead from the heart.

-Employees perceiving their boss as being trustworthy more frequently than anytime in history
-This new generation of workers responds differently to intrinsic and extrinsic rewards.

Mark systematically leads the reader through the challenges of today’s work environment and how scientific methods of hierarchical leadership may negatively impact business growth, employee satisfaction, and employee development. Mark takes us on a journey through transformational leadership and how he recognized he could increase his employees’ productivity and morale by leading from the heart. Leading from the heart doesn’t mean being a pushover and providing everyone a participation trophy so they feel good. Mark demonstrates how he engaged employees, established personal relationships, and helped develop them into motivated, successful individuals who were prepared for new and greater challenges. He describes his success by providing stories of honest feedback with candor while being respectful and truly caring about one’s growth potential.

Today we seem to be focused on short term goals—how am I going to achieve next quarter’s goals? Human capital is not valued the way it should be; management, in its zeal to achieve short term goals is not focusing on long term strategies for continued growth. Mark Crowley is providing a blueprint to leaders on how to change course and work toward getting the best out of employees, respect the value of human capital, and foster an environment where continued long term growth is attainable. This book will provide insight to those that are intrigued and feel that there may be a better way to lead. It’s a really good read too.

C for Courageous

The C in Mark C Crowley must mean courageous. It takes courage to write a business book about leading from the heart- the business world is rife with traditional managers ready to reject and mock any idea that emotion, feeling and heart have any place in business. However these are the same managers who will passionately support a sports team with a coach who puts his whole heart into his sports team coaching. So if it is ok in sport and boosts performance why not business?
Mark stands up for what he knows from experience- only by truly connecting with individual team members, authentically caring for them, appreciating their efforts, and enjoying helping them grow will you see the amazing potential of your team. And it's not just for your teams benefit - it's good for you too. Win-Win.

Mixing psychology, science, and personal experience he writes a compelling book which really tells every manager (human being) what they know deep down but may have suppressed in the desire to fit into the comfort zone of traditional management.
However, engagement is at an all time low and engagement survey results are sending Brexit style shockwaves through organizations as millenials in particular reject inauthentic disconnected traditional management and demand that their leaders help them grow, care for them and connect with them.
Read Mark's book and have the courage to lead from your heart as well as your mind, follow his clear steps to transformation and enjoy the results from your team and watch your reputation rocket and your career take off! My son loves this book

I was really impressed with the illustrations, worked into the story very well, my little one loved just looking at the pictures.
Fun story to read, i have read it to my son at least 4 times now, and he loves just as much as the first time.

would love to see more from the author and the illustrator.
