That "Geno" Cernan was commander of Apollo 17, the final manned moon mission, was a fitting conclusion to a flying career that included two previous stints in space (Gemini 9 and Apollo 10). His frank, earthy memoir of his years at NASA adds another entertaining, informative volume to the burgeoning shelf of books illuminating the inner workings of the space program and the people who made it happen. Coauthor Don Davis, a veteran journalist, helps Cernan craft a colloquial prose style that nicely captures the competitive, macho personality that seemed virtually mandatory for astronauts in the 1960s and '70s. Cernan candidly depicts the reckless streak that twice led to needless injuries jeopardizing his spot on a mission. He also acknowledges the stresses endured by his ex-spouse Barbara as she struggled to be the perfect astronaut wife--cheerful and uncomplaining for the cameras while he experienced all the fun and adventure of the job. The Odd Couple Goes To The Moon

You may think you've learned everything about the 12 men who walked on the moon, but Gene Cernan's perspective and insights are a great read. 50 years after the clean cut image days, we see the drive to excel. There are candid remarks about not all the astronauts being the best of pals, great anecdotes and, in spite of Cernan wishing he were a poet to better share his experiences with all those taxpayers and engineers and technicians who put him on the moon, he gets the point across that the experience was beyond comprehension and articulation. I've read much on lunar geology by Dr Rock of UW Madison (aka Harrison Schmidt), but these human glimpses were priceless. Cernan is strong and opinionated, but gracious in sharing his beliefs and thoughts with us earthbound folk. He makes me wish people still had the drive to explore and to push themselves beyond the mundane.

Gene Cernan, what can you say? Only 12 people have ever walked on the surface of another world. All of them are over 80 now, those that are still alive. Gene Cernan was the last man to step off the Moon. It would be like Colombus discovers the new world, and Magellen goes around the world a few years later. And then all the voyages stopped. No one else crossed the ocean. We have too many problems at home, we must solve those before we can explore the New World. Ten Thousand years from now, those 12 men's names will be enshrined in history, and every other name from the last 200 years will be forgotten.Gene Cernan, what can you say?

A great read, and now a movie. I went to see the premier of the movie, The Last Man on the Moon, here in Canberra, Australia where Gene Cernan was there answering questions and telling more interesting stories about his amazing life. Three space flights, two to the moon, one flight, of course landed and camped out on the moon for 3 days. A remarkable life, a living legend and a true hero.

Thisted's book is very good

This book provides a lucid and very informative account of Statistical Computation as of the late 80's. It covers many topics not covered in other books on the subject such as Kennedy and Gentle (1980): Statistical Computing, Marcel Dekker. It is very good when it deals with matrix computations and their uses in Statistics. However, it does not adequately deal with simulation and the consequent statistical techniques, which have gained importance since the book was published due to their seminal use in Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods. Nonetheless, it is an excellent book and one of my favourites.

A great source on computing.

I have more than 100 books on Statistics and quite a few on statistical computing, but this is among the five or six books that I have used the most in the 12 years of my career as a Statistician. The other day, I opened Givens and Hoeting (2nd Edition, 2013) with the hope to learn something on adaptive quadrature methods of integration. That book has only a few lines on the topic and refers to three books and Thisted's book is one of the three. This single incident suggests how good Thisted's book is. This book rarely disappoints.

Good for some purposes

I had hoped for a text on plant and animal biomechanics which would be a bit more engineering-focused than the old book of Wainwright et al. (Mechanical design in organisms) or the Vogel and Alexander books. Ennos' book spends most of the time summarizing polymer properties and basic mechanics of solids with some biological examples. The mathematics is quite elementary. Plants predominate, which makes sense given Ennos' background.

As a text for a mechanics course for biologists, this could work. If you want a biomechanics text for engineers, to follow an introductory materials course and a mechanics course, this is not it.

As a monograph on mechanics of biological materials, Wainwright et al. may still be best. I have still not found a human biomechanics book that I really like.

Best Pizza Cookbook of the Year!

As a professional pizzeria owner, this book is my favorite of the year! I've made at least five of these pies for my customers and they loved them. This book is easy to use, innovative, pizza-specific and upbeat without the pomposity of cookbooks from "know-it-all" chefs. I especially like the way that other small pizzerias across the country are represented here. The corn crust is now my go-to vehicle for all my southwest style pies and I am definitely stealing the Finocchio pizza with this delicious fennel jam as mine! Here's my version of Craig's fabulous Grilled Pear and Bacon Pizza, (I added some Stilton)

Home cooks, pull out your pizza stones! This is a terrific book. I would say that the Deep Dish Reuben Pizza is one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten (not only in the pizza category!) The Chunky Tomato Sauce recipe is magical. There is a pizza for everyone here--classic, innovative, deep, thin, gluten-full and gluten-free. I am happy to have it on my shelf and need no other pizza book.

I bought this book as a gift for someone who is a nationally ranked dressage rider. It is a very clear and precise description of the movements that a horse must master, in the right sequence, to achieve the best results in dressage showing. The text assumes that the rider is already highly competent and is working with a trainer &/or competent ground person. It is basically the standard of reference for dressage performance.

What it is NOT is a training manual that might help you train your horse by yourself, or improve your riding. There is little or no 'coaching', no warm encouragement, and no problem solving.

MUST HAVE PANCE REVIEW BOOK!!!

This book is a MUST HAVE while preparing for the PANCE during clinical rotations. The author gives sample exam questions, which many books do, but he also provides a complete rationale behind each answer choice, enabling the reader to understand why one answer is better than the others. Also, this book is organized by similar symptoms and diseases, as opposed to the traditional way of organizing study aids by body systems. While dividing each section by body systems is efficient for some, it doesn't allow the reader to think like a clinician. In medicine, patients present with a variety of symptoms, often times involving more than one body system, so this book really teaches you to think like a clinician, as opposed to a student. For that reason, I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Specialty PA passes !

Since many of us PA's work in a specialty practice, we need a 'to the point' review book.
This book has 2 parts: the Essential section and the Performance test section.
The Essential section has >200 questions with more than one correct answer followed by a 'You should Know' paragraph that has comparative and contrasting info to distinguish between the diseases /incorrect-correct answers. This was worth everything !!!
The Performance section has >300 questions with one correct answer to put you in the test mode w/a reference page that leads you back to the essential section- an additional review- if it didn't sink in the first time!
The CD is broken down into the fields in which we will be tested- excellent format.
The APPENDIX at the back wraps things up nicely.
Use this book and you'll pass---- I DID !!

ABSOLUTE DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

I am currently a PA student in the middle of the didactic year and an admitted MEDIOCRE test taker. I believe test taking is a SKILL which can be improved upon. Looking for ways to improve, I sought out various PANCE REVIEWS, like Kaplan and Princeton to improve my test-taking strategies (a pre-requisite in PA school where testing is de rigueur) as well as preparation for the PANCE. Searching for something more, I found out a classmate was using the Davis PA Exam Review now in its 2nd Ed. After further review, my advice is simply-PUT IT AT THE TOP of your list. Did I just yell?? This book is an absolute GEM. I have used other reviews and NONE COMPARE to the unique learning system in this book. The Davis Review takes a multi-dimensional approach to thinking about and MASTERING the concepts the PANCE tests. Most books use outdated, recycled questions- not good. In Davis's book, you actually GET INSIDE THE MIND of a former TEST WRITER FOR PANCE. Did I forget to mention the author, Dr. Diamond, was on the PANCE test-writing committee and personally crafted questions for the PANCE? The book has two parts which make it different. The ESSENTIALS section contains question and answers which LINK all clinical physiological systems seamlessly by providing more than one correct answer to a particular question. The format serves as a REVIEW of material and gets you thinking as a CLINICIAN would in practice. In the appendix, these key SUMMARIES are revisited in detail and represent material most likely tested by the PANCE. After gaining a better understanding of concept and questions, you can head to the PERFORMANCE section and test yourself. Unlike other books that divide questions by system, the PERFORMANCE section is MODELED after the actual PANCE, which throws all systems, GI, CARDIO, NEURO, etc. together in a shotgun fashion. This allows the reader to avoid compartmentalized thinking which does not work in the PANCE. In addition, there is a money-back GUARANTEE along with a companion CD with hundreds of extra questions. it is an amazing piece of Arab feminist writing

While some people have complaints about the rawness of this writing (as it is definitely not the most polished of Nawal El Saadawi's work), it is an amazing piece of Arab feminist writing, that addresses complex issues like female genital mutilation and prostitution. Strongly recommend this for anyone taking a class dealing with Arabic Culture (specifically in Egypt) or Women in the Arab World. It's important while reading to remember that the text was heavily edited by publishers and Saadawi herself to more palatable for the Western view, and that several chapters and passages condemning western culture have been removed, leading to a loss of several important themes and motifs.
