If variety is the "spice" of life, then social work is one of the "hottest" careers around. Variety is one of the things that make social work practice exciting for so many members of the profession. It's also one of the reasons so many people don't fully understand exactly what social workers do....

Indeed, it is sometimes difficult to articulate exactly what one does as a social worker, and the profession is sometimes misunderstood. So, when I set out to publish a book about social work, I wanted to convey a sense of not only what professional social workers do, but what their lives are like on a day-to-day basis.

This book is about real life social workers. It says, "I'm a social worker. Spend a day with me and see what it's like." It takes a firsthand, close-up look at the roles social workers play every day in places from hospitals to prisons to universities. It celebrates the joys and rewards of social work, and it presents a realistic view of the challenges of being a social worker. In it, real life social workers describe their days--not necessarily "typical" days, since most say there is no such thing, but days that are representative of the essence of their work....

Since [the] third edition, the need for social workers has continued to grow into even more diverse areas. We have continued to see social workers involved in the aftermath of such disasters� as Hurricane Katrina, mass shootings at Virginia Tech, the attempted assassination of Congressperson Gabrielle Giffords, and others. Bullying and bullying-related suicide are issues that have been in the forefront, and social workers need to be and ARE in the forefront helping to alleviate and prevent an epidemic from occurring. Cyberbullying and the effects of social media, both positive and negative, are emerging concerns. Military social work is a growing field, as is gerontological social work. Newspapers have reported the use of social work services in department stores and in public libraries. Indeed, social workers can be found just about anywhere.

Technology continues to grow as an integral part of our society. No longer simply an "add-on," knowledge of the latest technology has become an issue of cultural competence for social workers. In response to the enormous and ongoing development of new technologies and their implications for the social work profession, I have added an appendix to this edition to introduce readers to social work-related uses of social media, blogs, and mobile apps....

As you read DAYS IN THE LIVES OF SOCIAL WORKERS, you will discover that the career possibilities in social work are virtually endless. You will read about social workers who are employed by state and federal governments, social workers in private practice, social workers in other countries, social workers working for communities, and on and on. In each chapter, you will find something different, while you will also notice that many of the same core social work skills are used across settings.

My hope is that you will use this book as a starting point--an introduction to the variety of roles social workers play every day. "A must for social work students"

There are at least one or two other books on the market that address a career in social work. . This book is by far the most thorough. As a social work professor, I have shared this book with dozens of students. They have sent their fellow students asking for copies. This book is also excellant for the more mature social work professional who may want to exchange or expand practice settings. The book doesn't contain glossy pictures or fancy tables, but it is written in such a way as to hold the interest of any social worker. The book covers a wide range of information including pros, cons, and salary ranges for various practice settings. Great resource book for the social work library!

Highly recommended for any prospective social workers

I read this book while I was getting my undergraduate degree for a class. It gave me an entirely new perspective on social workers. I discovered 50 jobs that I could have as a social worker. Most people think that being a social worker means removing children from their homes all day long. This book illustrates other jobs that social workers can do that I had never thought about. This book inspired me to get my MSW because so many of the social workers in the book have their MSW. Days in the Lives of Social Workers is great for anyone who is considering making social work their profession.

I received this book for Christmas and read it cover to cover by the next day. It gives the reader a large variety of social work careers, beyond the stereotypical case worker. It is incredibly well written and easy to read. A must for anyone thinking of pursuing a social work career!!!

God has maintained an unbroken line of divinely inspired and self realised souls to guide the world. Such holy saints help not only deluded men but also plants and animals. The whole world receives their blessings and their very presence helps others.

You should integrate the mantra and the breath. When this is done, just as the breath is natural for the physical body, the mantra becomes natural and when this continues during deep sleep, your Guru or God might come and give vision, you might hear shlokas, grasp things easily, receive instructions and mantras if necessary.

The mind should not be just an empty camp follower of an aggressive element of passion.

The mantra bursts the mind into its million pieces and what 'is' remains. Great power is released within yourself, with the atoms of the body but this must be used not for selfish gratification or for selfish ends but in the larger interest of society and one should be as a constant source of support, joy and sustenance to others.

Meditation is to go from Mano Laya (mental absorption in a Divine idea or concept) to Mano Nasha (negation of sense of difference with that idea) to Samadhi (total unity). And Samadhi or God Realisation is the birthright of every human.

Reflection is hundred times superior to hearing and meditation is one hundred thousand times superior to reflection but Nirvikalpa Samadhi is infinite in its results, where the Truth of the Brahman is clearly and definitely realised.

Guruji said, "Whatever you eat, first offer it to God and then eat." All present did that and started to eat. Sunil said, "The Manu Smriti says, 'Whatever a Brahmin may or may not do, only the silent repetition of the name of God governs His liberation.' Guruji said, "Correct, but here and everywhere else in the Gita, etc. you should remember that 'Brahmin' does not mean the caste as we know it today but, the class of people, those who are born from the head of God, i.e. having the thinking capability, they are the intellectuals.

Restrain speech in the mind, restrain the mind in intelligence, restrain the intelligence in awareness and merge also that awareness with the Brahman and attain supreme peace.

I like the simplicity of the book yet the message has been conveyed very sharply and subtly. truly appreciate the writer's experiences with his guruji; there is a great deal to learn from that.
Its nice to see that the vedic style of preaching is still alive. This book brings forth the very same magnitude of vedic preaching and also exposes the subtle yet strong bonds / relationship between a guru and a disciple or student. nice job!

About the Author

Dr Begona Gros is professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Barcelona, Spain. Her research interests include learning design, digital technology to support learning, videogames, and innovation methodologies. She has more than 200 research publications in refereed journals, international refereed conferences and book chapters. She is participating on a large number of editorial boards of prestigious journals and program committees of international conferences. She has recently contributed to books Digital Games and Mathematics Learning: Potential, Promises and Pitfalls (Springer, in press), Global Challenges and Perspectives in Blended and Distance Learning (IGI, 2013), Assessment and Evaluation of Time Factors in Online Teaching and Learning (IGI,2014).

Dr. Kinshuk holds the NSERC/iCORE/Xerox/Markin Research Chair for Adaptivity and Personalization in Informatics, funded by the Federal government of Canada, Provincial government of Alberta, and by national and international industries. He is also Full Professor in the School of Computing and Information Systems and Associate Dean of Faculty of Science and Technology, at Athabasca University, Canada. Areas of his research interests include learning analytics, learning technologies, mobile, ubiquitous and location aware learning systems, cognitive profiling, and interactive technologies.

He has more than 370 research publications in refereed journals, international refereed conferences and book chapters. He has been twice awarded the prestigious fellowship of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (2008 and 2013). He has also been invited as guest editor of 9 special issues of international journals in the past five years, and continues to serve on a large number of editorial boards of prestigious journals and program committees of international conferences. In his on-going sustained professional activities, he has initiated professional movements at international and national levels. At the international level, he is Founding Chair of IEEE Technical Committee on Learning Technologies, and Founding Editor of the Educational Technology & Society Journal (SSCI indexed with Impact Factor of 1.171 according to Thomson Scientific 2012 Journal Citations Report). At the national level, he is Founding Chair of the New Zealand Chapter of ACM SIG on Computer-Human Interaction, and Past President of the Distance Education Association of New Zealand.

Dr. Grainne Conole is professor of learning innovation and Director of the Institute of Learning Innovation, University of Leicester. Prior to this, she was Chair of E-Learning at the Institute of Educational Technology, The Open University, since April 2006.

She has research interests in the use, integration and evaluation of Information and Communication Technologies and e-learning and impact on organisational change. She has research, development and project management experience across the educational and technical domains; funding sources have included HEFCE, ESRC, EU and commercial sponsors. Very recent projects include the EU-funded projects OPAL, Deisgn-Practice, and X-Delia, the JISC-funded learner experience project, the ESRC TLRP Technology-Enhanced Learning project, PI led by Eileen Scanlon and Mike Sharples, as well as an OU Learning Design Project."

I loved this book! I absolutely love that the author gave me the indelible picture of how out-of-town our darling planet Earth is and how absolutely enormous the known universe it. Of course, I knew this, but the way he puts it is majestic. I also love the humility of this outstanding scientist. He acknowledges the fundamental mysteries as unknowable. I am going to start it all over again tonight. Thank you, Larry Bell, for your vast knowledge and for your talent in giving the layman access to it!

About the Author
Keikaku (Project) Itoh was born in Tokyo in 1974. He graduated from Musashino Art University. In 2007, he debuted with Gyakusatsu Kikan (Genocidal Organ) and took first prize in the "Best SF of 2007" in SF Magazine. He is also the author of Metal Gear Solid: Guns of the Patriots, a Japanese-language novel based on the popular video game series. After a long battle with cancer, Itoh passed away in March 2009. Itoh wrote Harmony, a Japan SF and Seiun Award-winning novel in the same setting as Genocidal Organ, while in the hospital receiving treatment for the disease.

Some have said that the translation was a bit clunky, but I disagree. Part of what makes this tory so wonderful and real is how it perfectly captures the nature of thought. The MC will be thinking about what he is about to do, and something about it thrusts his mind into a memory, and with those memories come so many complex emotions - and the writing navigates through all of these jumps beautifully. I personally don't feel that anything is lost through the translation. This was an amazing story that made me feel things, and grounds the reader a bit. I will definitely be visiting this novel again.

A meaty and enjoyable science fiction novel.

Simply put, I wish more contemporary science fiction was this smart and thoughtful. "Genocidal Organ" follows the adventures of a Special Forces soldier as he hunts down the person apparently responsible for spreading genocide around the world -- via a subtle linguistic pattern he embeds in a country's speeches, advertisements and other media. Humanity's capacity for killing each other over perceived ethnic and national divisions is conceived metaphorically as the organ of the title, just another part of our minds and bodies, able to be manipulated by the proper stimuli. Author Project Itoh imagines a very grim but not all that implausible near-future, and he stocks the book with plenty of philosophical musings -- but musings that have real, day-to-day implications as well as casting light on larger issues of how our world is ordered and maintained. The book isn't without flaws, but they are minor and hardly dealbreakers. The novel is highly readable with a gripping narrative and a fascinating villain. The narrator, too, is refreshingly reflective and un-macho. Very enjoyable, with lots of meat on the bone. You don't really think about how rare this combination is these days until you pick up a book like this one, making the also-rans feel like the fluff they really are.

Hard work, but worth it

Woah. I struggled for 150, make that almost 200 pages.
The writing is inelegant, and I truly pity the translator - probably some of the clunkiest constructions were fine in the original Japanese, but simply impossible to make elegant in translation. The result is hard on the reader.
So, why four stars? It's a good story, set in a well-imagined future, and some of the central characters are nicely drawn. The ideas come thick and fast, and are juxtaposed in a truly, surprisingly (to a Western reader who hasn't read much Japanese SF, anyway) original way - with the result that some sections that consist entirely of concepts and ideas I was well familiar with nonetheless left my brain buzzing with the implications from how Itoh links and deconstructs them.
Highly recommended if you're interested in deconstruction, self-aware storytelling, and meditations on death and cultural terror (it's in the title, really).

About the Author

Adam Weismann and Katy Bryce work with lime and clay on a daily basis through their company, Cob in Cornwall. They learned these skills through restoring ancient vernacular buildings in Cornwall, and then began to apply the traditional techniques and materials to contemporary eco builds. They are the authors of Using Natural Finishes: A Step-by-Step Guide.

Very informative book

This book shows you the ins and outs of cob building. It's very pleasant to read and a must for everyone interested in natural building. I own many books on natural building (mostly American) and find the views of the authors refreshing. You will not find claims of houses built for USD 15.000 or less in this book! No mumbojumbo, but just the bare facts in all of their beauty. I can wholeheartedly recommend this book as it will give you hours of reading pleasure.

Beautiful book

I like the book. It is thorough and well done. The only problem is that it is definitely directed at a UK audience, so a lot of the technical info on planning, land use, siting, and such isn't very helpful for North American builders. I think most of it could be figured out, and I enjoyed reading about this timeless construction method, but an American edition might be nice. I've lived in England, so could appreciate the differences more than some.

"Could have been a contender"

While reading this book, I got the overall impression that the authors experienced the construction, took a few photos and notes and later had the epiphany, "I think I'll write a book". This isn't meant to sound heartless toward the authors, but the book just doesn't carry you along. Too many times they make references that just seem redundant like they were getting paid by the word rather than reading well or just plain good instructions. It is enjoyable as light reading and some good pictures about the couples' experience, but just needs some more work to rate higher. I haven't compared it with other cob books but it falls short compared with most of the other earth construction books I've read. It's a good book at first glance but just "OK" once you get into it.
